The rough & ugly - very little.
It has 310,000 miles on the truck, with the engine having 210,000 miles. The engine is out of a 94 landcruiser and runs perfect. It throws a 401 (EGR) code once in a while - I just turn it off with the Scangauge. Small dent in passenger lower rocker panel (softball sized), small dent in hood, small dent in rear hatch. Front leather seats are cracked, patched with leather and covered with canvas seat covers. Cracked windshield - vertical crack entire length just left of rear view mirror.
This truck has no rust. Before it came to me it was a mom-mobile in northern California.
1HZ/Turbo/H55/TC
I don't know much about my HZ engine, but here is what I know. It was a Canadian mine truck engine that was sold to a Nevada mining company. Nevada was prevented from using the rigs by the EPA, so they retrofitted new, compliant engines into the trucks for underground mining and sold (I think 7) engines to a couple guys in Utah. I got the engine from one of them. It is my belief that ENS Toyota rebuilt these engines prior to them coming to the USA (that would be 2008/9+-). The engine looks clean and gives no indication of having any problems. It is sitting in the garage.
H55/TC are essentially new. They have about 10,000 miles on them. I bought them new in 2003 and pulled them in 2004 when I put the diesel HZ into my 60 series. They have sat since then. The H55 is in process of having the 1HZ input shaft put into it.
Additional Parts: RADD just sent me down 98% of the additional parts that will be needed to do the transplant.
Known missing or needed items: 12v cutoff; 12volt starter motor to go into the 24v housing (may be able to use 1FZ starter guts); 12 volt AC (don't know if I have AC Bracket or not) the AC unit itself can come from any of a number of sources (maybe the 1FZ engine); Transmission support; Fuel Filtration (need to buy filters); 3" exhaust; manual hub conversion.
Turbo: CT26 turbo and piping that came off my HZ engine which came from Dave Steadman in Japan, (I'm using a Safari Turbo).
Truck: $10,500
Engine: $7,500 (includes engine, bellhousing, H55, TC, Turbo)
New Parts: Cost spent ($500-$1,000 - will need to define)
Total Cost AS IS: $18,000-$19,000 depending on new parts invoices
Salvage Values: Engine, Auto Transmission transfer say $500 (more if you part it out over time); new 2.5" exhaust (cats, O2 sensors, Muffler, piping) if you don't use it, say $200-$500; CDL switch $50+; Misc other items $100. So you should have salvage values of $800-$900, maybe more.
My guess (having done a 60-HZ transplant) is that you will have $1,500 in additional cost and maybe another $1,000 in labor if you have someone do the diesel. The cost could be cut down to almost zero if you do your own work and re-use what you have available. That would put your total cost at around $20,500. Then all you'd need to round out the perfect 80 series is: snorkel, winch - - then bigger tires, etc.
