funny- there are a few guys on that forum who actually have cruisers as well- they have even spoken of this forum on thiers- im surprised they have not popped up-

Uh-oh, are you talkin' 'bout me, Willis? ;)

edit: Is this the mint green truck? I remember it from P3. No opinion, but it looks outwardly like a nice truck.

This is the engine with the problems. They took the 3.0 liter and stroked it to 3.5, apparently they stroked it so much it ended up bending rods.

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that they also went to an aluminum head on the the 350. Given the high heat of the turbo, and the high compression of diesel in general, I seem to recall there being lots of head warpage with this engine.

I have a factory rebuilt crated OM617A 3.0L 5-cylinder turbo diesel going in mine (it was originally slated for my UNIMOG, but that fell through). It should fit like a glove where the current NA OM617 currently sits in the engine bay. This is the engine series upon which Mercedes built their "million-mile" reputation.

dclee, thanks for all the information. It is the same G350DT that has been on the P3 forum, despite this I am still buying it, I really can't wait to get it now after reading all the great things you said! I am really hoping I can keep both my 97 FZJ80 and the G350DT, so long as gas prices stay low my son will enjoy driving the 80, if (when) gas goes back up I guess I could always pitch in some gas money just to keep the 80!
The G engine does have the aluminum heads and for some reason the head bolts had a problem with loosening, there were alot of things that went wrong with this engine, surprising for Mercedes. The good news is that there are upgraded parts and knowledge from previous failures now that this engine is 15 years old. All the upgraded parts were supposedly used in this rebuild, that should help the engine last more like a normal engine, still not a million mile engine but like I said probably at least a 100,000 mile engine which is enough time for me to have a rebuilt short block ready to swap in when needed.

CRUISER CRUISER CRUISER!!! G wagons are for stupid :censor: Gangsters with to much drug $! And they are UGLEY!!!

Sure, if you call the U.S. Marines a "gang"...

I will agree they are ugly when blinged out with 22's and chrome but so are Land Cruisers. My plan is a mild lift, 33" tires, black out the grille and maybe the wheels, in other words I want to differentiate mine from the mall cruisers. I don't want it to look like a $100,000 G500, I want it to look like the extremely capable off road beast it is.

You know, 12!:D

He obviously doesn't get out in the "4wd" world much. I have seen what you describe, and I'll go as far as to say, I'll take it anyday!

Those rigs, lifted and tired are some bad ass looking trucks.

I have some DuPont Registry's with a guy in Texas that sells the modded ones...ok, and the not so modded ones. Cabs (2 door cabriolets) too. If it'll help I'll dig them up, if you want?

ahhh hemmm

4x4 Mercedes Benz - Readers Rigs

BTW, of all time, top 5, 4WDs.

Both the LC and the GWagon are in it, AFAIAC.

UniMog
H1 (you'll need an unlimited supply of money and parts, but a great 4wheeler)
G-Wagon
LC (it's a tie, really)
Toyota Hilux's 79-95.

Wow - that was enlightening.

Good luck Rusty. "G350DT" would have scared me off long ago with his endless tirades about that truck.

Even tho this is a cruiser board - POST PICS when you get the lift on it.

Very, very rich friend has a G500 AMG that I've been in - tank - fast tank. He also owns an H1 with the fastback rear roof - only a couple hundred in the country - thing is decked to the nines with everything. Sad - neither will see a spec of dirt!

LoL X2

I am a huge LC/LX addict, but I would be open to other rigs if I had a fat bill fold.

I have most of the same rigs in my top five trucks.

Reading this thread has made me respect the Gwagon. I used to think they were kind of cool sans 24" diamond studded wheels and low profile Z rated tires, but wow, I didn't know they were so tough and capable. Now I know what the hillbilly chebby/heep drivers think when they see my pink panty wagon spanking theire rigs on the trails.

There's no such thing as a G500 AMG, but there is a G55 AMG (supercharged 5.5L V8). And you're right, it is a fast tank...too fast IMHO...

That's the one. Starts as a G500 then souped up etc by AMG as a Benz tuner right?

The bottom is as smooth as a toboggan. Nothing sticks down below the frame rails, including the control arm mounts.

Agreed. Let's take a closer look.

Yep, not much hanging down below the frame rails. :D

Looks like some rich high school kid is going to get whipped.

The axles looks a little less beefy than the 80 axles, but that would be nice not to have junk hanging down from under the belly. No pun untended;)

that, was prolly his daddy.

 I HAD to school him...:whoops:

Idiot! That mercedes is only front wheel drive and weighs about 5000 pounds. Also they are luxury cars. Not offroad trucks like the jeeps and chevys in the vid.

r u special?

I tink u r getting it confused with something else. The G Wagon is one of the best 4 (that's a four) Wheel (those are the round things) drives (that means power goes to it)on the planet?

That means it eats Chebbys and Jeeps for breakfast....

yep, retarded. You think its FWD, and Chevy's and Jeeps are better. Oh, and sorry for the big words...moron.

I have always liked the G wagons. Became a big fan when I saw them in Germany in the mid 90s and realized it was not just a luxury suv. Sounds kinda like a Land Cruiser.

The Marine Corps uses them as an Infantry Fast Attack Vehicle IFAV. Not sure if they are turbo. I used to see them running around Camp Lejeune and I saw alot of them in OIF I, but since armor became an issue I have not seen too many.

They look pretty tough with heavy and medium machine guns; but so does the Land Cruiser.

I believe they replaced the M151 Jeep.

Great pics of the G on its side! I can tell what I am getting into now! It appears to be a 6 cylinder from the exhaust. They are pretty hard to lay over, I have seen a couple videos where they look they they should tip and they don't, one was even a Mercedes dealer with it on a ramp trying to demonstrate how far it could lean, pretty impressive.
cruiser-poor, I am either going to kick myself for believing that it is now repaired properly, or like I said, thank the P3 forum for killing the sale of it, but again for the price I am paying I can drop a new engine in it and still be ok.
Right now I am just trying to find a way to get it to Texas from the east coast.
