New to ownership of a 92 Land Cruiser with auto transmission (195,000 mi). The transmission wont shift until 3200 to 3500 RPM's. If driving at steady speed (3000 rpm and going up) or very slow acceleration shifts can be harsh. If you just mash the gas it seems to shift fine through all gears, not hard/no slip, its just at such high RPM. Using the shifter manually does not change the shift point. It seems to automatically downshift as it should.
For a less inclined mechanic as I am, would a simple drain and refill of the fluid be advised? Could a high level of fluid case this. I noticed its just above the high side of "Hot" on the stick.
Does the cable at the throttle body change up shifts or only the "kick down"?

Any advise from the good folks here on the site would be appreciated.

Thanks, Max

Progress update late shifts

I did the simple thing last night and changed fluid. No change in shifting:mad: While letting it drain I took a look at the cable that is activated by the throttle, I had read about adjusting it for proper operation. What I found is it appears to be fully extended. Or in a position as if the throttle had been fully depressed and the cable did not retract. I did try to move it just to see if it would retract but it didn't move in either direction.

I did try shifting manually after the fluid change, no change during up shift during acceleration. What I did find is going down hill if I start in 1st manually, accelerate slowly and then let the momentum speed the truck, I can move the shifter to second and it shifts at almost any RPM I choose,(foot off the gas) same with 2nd to 3rd?

I suppose if its not something that can be performed through the pan its off to a transmission shop? Any advise would be helpful.
