I’m brand new to this forum. I have been a Toyota 4wheel enthusiast 30 years and have had several different models. I have always wanted a Landcruiser and spotted this unique rig for sale in a Craigslist ad which connected me with the importer; Japan Direct Motors (japandirectmotors.com).
When I reached out to purchase it (sight unseen, stupid I know), I had good communication with the owner, Brooks. I felt comfortable with the purchase and had it shipped to Montana.
I physically had the rig for 3 days and the transmission disintegrated. I was in the middle of moving and no longer had my shop to work on it myself. I reached out to the owner of Overland Cruisers in Bozeman. He was incredibly helpful getting in to his shop, and at this point I just assumed that it was the clutch that had fallen apart. Upon inspection, the clutch was fine. When they pulled the drain on the transmission some very low viscosity, black fluid came out with metal. It’s not a standard R151, the LC had a larger input shaft. This fix is going to be over $5,000.
When it first broke down I reached out to Brooks and told him what happened and he responded that it was a “bummer.” I emailed him the invoice for the estimate and explained that I am marketing for his import company and that I realize that it’s an as is no warranty sale, but that this is a black eye for his business.
This was a huge purchase for what I saw as my dream rig. It’s now a costly nightmare and I just want everyone to be aware of this business/business owner. I wouldn’t have any faith in his vehicles.
On the other side, I have great respect for Stephen at Overland Cruisers. He is doing everything to make sure that it gets back out there and onto Montana’s trails.
For whatever it’s worth.

Usually gearboxes give some warning. I was only aware of 2 types of R151, the 3 piece shaft and the 2 piece shaft (newer and better). Maybe the 2 piece shaft is thicker. Yours would be the 3 piece.

He should have at least met you halfway. I would have thought he would have checked all fluid levels as well.

Zero warning. Just heard parts and pulled over. I was going to go through all fluids that weekend.
As far as meeting me halfway, I would have been satisfied with that. He didn’t even respond to my email.

Great to see another 70-series here in Montana! Sorry to hear about your troubles though. I wasn't aware of the different input shaft for the 1PZ powered cruisers, but I looked up the part number (33301-60040) and it would appear that it was only used in that application. Does your engine use the dual mass flywheel? If so, you might be able to convert to a 1HZ flywheel and use an R151 from a later 1HZ powered cruiser. Other than the input shaft it looks like the transmission should be the same inside as any other R151 pre-1995, so a rebuild kit or replacement transmission should work just fine if your input shaft is in good enough shape to swap over.

Those shafts have a way of separating. Its good you came here because we can get an idea of which importers are no good.
This fellow had a speedometer discrepancy on a vehicle some time back. I don't know the outcome.
Sounds like he gets them off the ship and puts a 4 sale sign on and thats it.

How is the rest of it? I would ask the new guy if he can check it out. When they are let go and everything big and small needs a service, it can get expensive. Its mainly in the suspension, brakes, front axle, and steering. Not so bad if you can do most of it yourself.

Toyota upgraded the part when they used the R151 in the HZJ78/79/105 series. Fleet owners were irate, some of the big miners in Australia had meetings with Toyota.
Owners who look after them can get a long life. But the mining and mining rental companies destroyed them.

Yeah it has the dual mass flywheel that I feel it needs with the 5cyl. I underestimated the lack of power. It needs the torque. I would love to do a turbo.
Motor is good and the lockers work good. It’s clean, just some rust.
Stephen at Overland has been straightforward and honest about everything. He priced out options and I went with new. I know that it’s expensive but don’t ever want to have to think about it again.

They’re going to look at everything before I get it back. Wish I would have gone through it myself before this happened but I was moving.
