Curious if anyone out there knows the type of paint process that was used back in '91 on the US 80?

I notice when I polish the paint with light compound that it does pick up some color(white code 045).
Didn't think this was possible with clear coat applications.

thanks

The paint process for the solid colors like the whites, reds and blacks were a Urethane based single stage, kind of like an acrylic enamel where the gloss is in the color. This was supposed to be a more durable paint but didn't qute hold up in the sun and heat. They always "chalk" up. So you are right on using the light compound or even a cleaner wax with like an orbital buffer, you don't want to use a high speed buffer because the heat will actually burn the paint and you wuold have dark streaks all over the place.

Thanks MCD!

I asked because I have a few damaged panels from a recent collision and found some replacement parts doors and fender flares from some fellow mudders.

But the replacement parts are all dark green in color(from '97) and I'll have to paint them the original 045-white to match.

Looks like I'll be doing a lot of sanding, especially on the doors with the added "bonus" of doing the door jambs.
I'm hoping for a nice match to exisiting paint. If not, then I may have to shoot the whole side of vehicle to keep it looking uniform.

At least the single-stage urethane will save me a step compared to base/clearcoat.
