91 FJ80 3FE Not Firing

Hey guys!! Iam a newbie to this site and I have been having trouble with my 91 with the 3FE and I wanted to see if any of ya'll could give me some advice? I drove the LC last week (the day that it snowed) and after filling up my gas tank it would not start. I had read that this could be an EFI relay issues so I pulled out the EFI relay under the hood (which was very hot) and waited a few minutes and then reinstalled it. It finally started but a few miles down the road it started running really rough and it sounded like it was backfiring and it was losing power. After pulling over and shutting the motor off for 10 minutes it fired back up and I had 3 lights on the dash the A/T temp light, the Brake light, and the Battery light. I proceeded to drive the LC back to my house which was 25 miles away and they whole way back I could not accelerate over 20mph and the LC kept making the back firing noise. I had the gas pedal all the way to the floor and the engine rpm was at 3000 but I could not go over 20mph. I started to lose battery power and the LC finally died 1/4 mile from my house. Once it died it would not even turn over at all. The battery was completely dead. I towed it home and I have been working on it here and there (it is not a primary vehicle just my toy) I have so far :

Recharged the battery (which is only 2 months old)
Installed a new Negative/ground wire to the battery
Installed new battery terminal connectors
Cleaned out the air filter and housing
Tested the fusible links (which ohmed out fine)
Replaced the EFI relay (which made the lights on the dash go off)
Checked the connections on the fuel pump (which were fine)

Now The lights on the dash have gone off, however the CEL still does not light up when the key is turned to the "ON" position. The LC tries to start however I do not hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key to the "ON" position. I have checked the battery voltage and it is at 13v. Any thoughts on what it could be?? I'm running out of things to look at while I wait for my FSM to arrive in the mail. Not to mention we got 3" of snow in Raleigh NC and I cannot take my Toy out in it :(

HELP!!!

If the vehicle is running, the battery should NEVER die. The alternator always provides sufficient volts to charge the battery.

Sounds to me like your alternator is toast. I'd put a trickle charger on the battery overnight to try to get it up to ~14 volts and replace the alternator.

I have a 92 FSM so I scanned the first 2 pages of troubleshooting for your problem. Johnny knows his sh*t, so I would definitely take his advice. The first item to check is what Johnny suggested; the battery/charging system. If you need me to scan more pages, let me know. Good luck with your fix.

i am suprised Kenny can use a scanner. I would have thought at his advanced age he would by typing the pages needed on his type writer and then put the letter in the mail.

generally when all hell breaks loose on a 3fe the alt is the culprit. Have it tested and if it is bad do yourself a favor and get it rebuilt to a much higher output or buy a mean green. There are many 3fe alt upgrade threads in the 80s section with the companies to contact for the upgrade.

I'm hoping mine dies so i can justify a better one, but it just keeps taking my neglect and smiling.

You know me too well Parker! I've only had this scanner for 3 years and just finally figured out how to work it..

Because the typewriter broke. :flipoff2:

Thanks for all of the insight! I figured that the Alternator was toast and I plan on having it rebuilt locally here in Raleigh, however I cant even check to see if it is in fact bad as I cant get the LC to start with a fresh battery in it......and I have already replaced the EFI relay, and the main EFI fuse is not blown.......

Can you be more specific? Power wise such as inside the vehicle or like voltage at the battery? When I turn the key to ON i can attempt to start the LC but it will not fire. The radio, clock, and interior lights work...I have 13v on the battery....

It sound like fuel pump. If the engine is turning

Sorry for asking the stupid question, but...are you sure the CEL worked before all this went down? If I recall from one of your threads, the vehicle had been out of your possession for some time. You MAY have a burnt bulb and be chasing symptoms based on that.

Something to think about...

Jerry, as I learned long ago the only stupid question is the one never asked......I appreciate the insight. I'm pretty certain that it did work, however I will go out an double check the bulb to make sure it is not blown. Thanks again.

You crack the line while turning it over correct ?

It only take so many things for an engine to run. Air / fuel / spark.

So if you are getting fuel then look at the spark. Are you getting spark ?
