No, I appreciate the info. I wanted to know as much as possible before they contact me tomorrow. Thanks again.

Update...dealership called Monday and said they were covering cost of everything. So I was very happy. Just received another call today saying the mechanic started taking things apart and found a vacuum house that had been pulled off when he was doing his original routine service! Sooooo according to them, this was causing the CEL and the secondary air pump is fine. They are going to keep the truck till tomorrow to make sure there aren't any more issues that magically appear. Well, I'm not mad but how dumb do you have to be. I am not a Toyota/Lexus mechanic....but come on...I mean seriously. For the record, they have been extremely nice, loaned us a 2013 RX for a week, and matched an independent shops price.

I take my wife's car to dealership out of convenience. I have changed timing belts water pumps rebuilt engines etc on many of my past cars so it's nice to let someone else work on our family car, but this was in no way convenient.

Glad to hear it was something small. Disappointing they didn't find that before contacting you and telling you the pump came apart.

It's one thing to mess up, as we are all humans, but sounds like the tech made a SWAG at at the issue rather than determining the actual issue at hand.

Same exact thing happened to me regarding the super charger on my wife's Benz during a routine B service. "Uh, seems like your supercharger happened to give out on our after service drive around, sorry sir." Cock suckers wouldn't remotely come close to the idea that the dumb asses had forgot a hose. I actually had to agree to pay them to do the service again I hopes of them indeed finding a hose they had forgot to put the clamp on. Needless to say, when I came to pick up the car free of charge with them eating crow I made a huge scene. Had the dealer owner and the service manager and the GM, all begging me to take a free A/B service series as payment for their ineptitude... I laughed in their faces and gave em the ih8mud salute. 3 potential customers in the middle of their deals walked out behind me, it was awesome. I had bought 4 Benzs through them at the time...

Same problem

So last week CEL and other lights come on my 07 w 78k.
Local dealer takes a look and says evap code, sells me a new gas cap, resets cel.

Lights come on today. Engine won't do more than 50. Take it back, new code per service writer, one of these air pumps supposedly, $2k plus. How do I know if it was a vac hose knocked off? Is there in fact 10 yr warranty under TSB.

Second 100 series, thought these were bulletproof with synthetic plus timing and oil changes.

Reeling here any help appreciated.

They are bullet proof if you armored it up

Not sticking up for the dealer since it sounds like the hose was just off, BUT it is EXTREMELY unlikely that they could do anything to actually make the secondary air pump fail and/or the valves. There is a TSB out on those pumps/valves that covers multiple vehicles and years with the 2UZ. If they pulled the code and it had one of the codes listed in the TSB then they probably just assumed that's what it was. The way the intake for that system is designed it's unlikely that anything could get into it while they are working on it. The intake portion is in the fender well and pretty well covered. Most of the issues with that system were caused by moisture (water intrusion using Toyota's verbaige).

I know the common feeling in consumer world is that the dealers only have their best interest in mind and not yours. Keep in mind that this is a customer service business and without you (the consumer) the dealers would all be out of business. So, it is in their best interest to keep you as a customer. The best advice I can give is just to be reasonable, collect all the facts, and then see what they will do for you. You'd be surprised what can be accomplished. I bend over backwards for customers all the time whether it's our fault or not.

Ended up being air pump and valve. Did the 90k early as well. Dealer gave me a bit of a discount.

TSB was no help and I'm in a smog check state so the Tundra bypass is not an option.

First world problem for sure, but if I had to do it over again I would probably avoid 06, 07 models. They are all old cars now and this design seems to deviate from expected Toyota reliability at great cost relative to the vehicle value.

Utah have some internet points for the "tech" advice. You funny guy.
