Everyone,

Is it possible that an '88 FJ71 exists with a factory diesel. I've seen the vin plate and it shows it's an FJ71. It's RH drive from Japan. Just want to make sure this is possible because I always thought FJ's were gas engines and BJ's/HJ's were diesels.

Also, any suggestions on fair price for this with 74,000 km, no rust, everything operates perfectly and is in great shape?

:popcorn::beer:

Somebody may have done a conversion, I thought the JDM 71 only came as a BJ or an LJ.

What engine does to have in it?

So, it is legit then. Cool. I've only owned 40's, 60's and 80's before. I don't know much about the 2T motor. Is it a good motor? What do you think a rig like this coming from Japan is worth? I'll throw a couple of pics up as well. Is this a capable rig? I'm not going to be wheeling it but it will see some light duty. My 80 gets the joy of playing.

Thanks for your help!

That looks like a beauty to me! I have owned several 2lt powered vehicles and I think this particular truck has the 2lt (not 2lte) - big difference... I would double- confirm this fact alone before contemplating purchase. Look for a black rocker cover with "2lt" on it in red letters. I have seen many racked up 400,000k+ on the 2lt powered mini-trucks sold in Canada 85-87 and the rust finally killed them, not the powerplant. Wont win any races or tow much of anything (maybe a quad/tiny boat/util trailer). Others may disagree.. Anyways, maybe you have a pic of engine bay - you will notice difference right away between the 2lt and 2lte / 2ltII. I like these older "bundera" style swb - with a 5 spd, coils, and factory winch yer laughin! Sure looks tidy! Even looks like is has a factory full floater rear? Nice score if price is right for you. Good luck!

Here are pics of the motor. It looks like red lettering on the valve covers. Does this mean its the 2LT (more desirable)?

Thanks for your help!

Yep that'd be the one! I was wrong it says turbo d in red, 2lt in grey been a few years!

Btw please double check the chassis number and build plate. It should not start with fj71 but rather lj71-000xxxx something like that.

Sweet! Thanks for your help.

I had an RJ70, which the 2.4L petrol engined version when I was 20 and it was great. Underpowered and way too small, but damn that thing rode nice on them coils. I've got a BJ74 now which is a lot more capable but is on leaves and like a driving a tractor. Basically when it comes to the 7x series they were divided into Light Duty and Heavy Duty. The Light Duty trucks were coiled and shared parts with the Hilux [I think mini truck in NA?]. Engine, trans, axles etc. The HD trucks shared parts with 40's, 60's, 80's and 100's. Yours is an LD truck. What does it mean? Probably not much if it's a DD and cared for, but if you expect to get 500 000 trouble free miles out of it it probably won't happen. The HD trucks were just that: Heavy Duty. Yours is a beautiful example and if you like it, buy it. Just do a little more research on the engine. I've seen 22LT/LTE thrashed around on here as a dirty word. Good luck dude! :)

that's the 2LT, not lte, it appears. No computer or ecu. like others have said, 8" diffs, axles, drive shafts, transmission are same as the early 4 runner/mini truck. Steering knuckle and breaks are same as the 60. I have one from Germany and it's a blast to drive. You can push throw it around like Mario Andretti and still not break any laws, and you just about have to, it's that under powered. Besides parts availability, I don't have any complaints, a fun to drive truck, and that one looks great.

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. The guy that I bought it from says that it rides beautifully on the road. And as much as I like the idea of beating it around off road, well, I don't do that much. Plus I've got my 80 that loves to get dirty and is sick of being a mall cruiser for the past 6 years as my daily driver. It wants to play. So the 80 will become my project (lift, bumpers, etc) and the 71 will become my daily driver. All in all, it works out. I love my 80 but wouldn't mind a little better ride on the road once in a while. :)

Now I just have to wait patiently for a month for it to get here from Japan...

. I've seen the vin plate and it shows it's an FJ71.

This is a worry, double check it. An FJ71 is a heavy duty leaf sprung version with a carbed 3F petrol engine.

Double checked the VIN plate. It shows LJ71. Phew.
