Hi again. Wanted to get a better understanding of this transmission and if it need a rebuild or maybe better cleaning. 247K miles. The transmission (since I bought it 2 years ago) has a slip between 2nd and 3rd. I changed the filter and cleaned the pan about 10K miles ago.
ISSUES:
  • slips between 2nd and 3rd on easy start offs
  • on uphill street climbs, it kicks down from 3rd to 2nd and almost redlines the tach
  • bangs and clangs when put into gear from neutral with rpms about 750 or lower.(most times but not always)
  • Slow to go into reverse with cold engine on cold days.
Saw the "Rodney Flush" and ran about 5 gallons of synthetic through it till it was reddish again.
GOOD RESULTS: It shifts much more smoothly-- No clanging banging from neutral -- No cold weather hesitation --
Other Results: on heavy takeoff, it runs through the gears strong without any slippage, even uphill.---On soft take off, it still slips from 2nd to 3rd but not quite as bad. BUT if you are climbing a hill and it downshifts, it still almost redlines before you can get off the pedal.

Not being a transmission guy, I really dont know if this a dirty valve situation OR worn bands OR both. Common sense tells me 247K miles take a toll on any tranny. I want to avoid a rebuild (for a bit longer) Had a reputable Cruiser mechanic tell me also that the HARD parts for this tranny are getting harder to find if it need them.

Any thoughts or advice are welcome.

Replace with an H55 manual. The best mod you will ever do to your FJ62.

I am thinking about that. I have everything to do it except the H55. I have the 4 speed.. We actually were about to do this before my son found his 84 FJ60 so he took his new H55 and put it in his 84.

Check the kick down/throttle cable adjustment to the transmission, and if the cable is functioning.
Mine was broken when I got the 89, and it would act similar on 2-3 shifts. Once replaced, it works great! Hope this helps!
