what kind of filters does one use with a diesel engine. They look more like oil filters dont they? How about a fuel/h2o seperator?

Where do more people mount these things? On the chassie rail or under the hood somewhere?

There is lots to choose from. Just make sure it can handle the flow.
Im using a Delco 296 with built in primer and water separator.

The separator that are isolated from the filter hold more water. I havent had a drop of water in mine so far.
Something with a glass bowl is ideal as you can inspect the contents without removal

I think the closer to the engine the better. The older landcruisers had the water separator midway along the chassis but now everything is in the engine bay

Its very similar to mine
The glass bit is a built in water separator and the filter is on top.
The filter costs about $7-8
.

You say your unit has a built in primer. Don't you have to prime at the injection pump as well?
I guess a picture or diagram would be the best thing for me at this point.
Do you have the h2o seperator wired with a warning light in the cab. I have herd of these types of setups before. When the bowl gets full with water it triggers a drain warning light?

The 1HZ pumps dont have a primer on them. When you want to purge them of air you pump the primer till the inj pump has fuel.
Remove the glowplugs and disconnect any 3 injector lines at the injectors.
You hit the starter and the engine spins the injector pump fast enough to pump the air out of the system.

I think my HZJ75 has a filter warning light if it has water. My 73 does'nt have one but the standard of fuel is high here and I have never seen or heard of water in the fuel ,so I am not too worried.
 
are the glow plugs in an easy to reach location? Over time they are bound to get very tight in there, do you put any anti-sieze on the threads?

They are easy to reach and I have a deep socket for taking them out.
My old ones came out easy and that was from a dirty old 1HZ from the mines that had been immersed in salt water
Glowplugs should never be overtightened.
I try to spray some solvent on things a few days before I want to work on them.

The Racor turbine Series filters are nice. More cost up front for the assembly, but the replacement cartridge filter elements are cheap. The clear bowl wih drain is a nice feature.

What kind of fittings are requird to make this system work?

None usually. You just plug in the rubber outlet/inlet fuel lines. They usually come with fittings that can be swiveled to the right angle to suit the position of the fuel line.
You need to make a bracket out of some right angle aluminium or steel so you can bolt it to a fender or somewhere.
All the fuel filters on diesel that I have seen sit higher than the fuel pump.

I think this is a bargain if you want to keep it Toyota .This bolts onto the factory bracket which comes in single or dual(separate water separator) types.
