I'm planning on picking up one of these beasts in three weeks or so and would like to fill out my request for importation form received from Toyota. So,if someone with this model could check their emission label under the hood and give me the engine family, evap familyand engine (3B I would imagine). I would appreciate it. Also need the following info from the vehicle's certification label on the door area: the model code and the certification statement (such as, this vehicle conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety...blah blah)
Thanks, Bret

One other thing, perhaps NorCalCruzer can tell me what he did on his form about this. They ask for date of first use, and also ask for a photocopy of title or original bill of sale to verify date of first use. Unfortunately, Canadian titles say nothing about date of first use and most people don't retain the original bill of sale. Perhaps manufacture date?

Does that mean you are not going with a registered importer? there are very informative threads about that.
I actually doubt that my 85BJ70 has an emission plate under the hood, but I will go check and take pics of all the plates for you, if there are any.

If an importer isn't necessary I see no point in using one. You may have missed a thread by NorCalCruzer in which he explained that after going through an importer, California DMV is still requiring a letter of conformity from Toyota. Therefore, I think the letter is the first place to start. Either way would likely work fine in my state of Alaska, however. The emissions plate should be in the vicinity of the master vac. Thanks.

Emissons label...

Hmmmmm...

What's that?

What, the label on your 89 BJ74 has gone missing already? Guess it's not aircared, eh?

I was being facetious, as I believe this is a gasser thing. I have never seen an emissions tag on my BJ60, either BJ42, nor on any Jap import. If the Cdn gassers have the tag I have no idea...never owned one.

Yes, the BJ74 is fully processed, Provincially inspected, and has a BC VIN assigned. Aircare will be this year before the next renewal.

Greg,
Thanks, that's interesting information. Evidently the tag on the firewall that I was assuming to be the emissions label is actually the ID plate....duh...... Hmm. leaving that area blank on the application form doesn't strike me as a good omen. Evap family: "none". How about engine family? Toyota oil burners?

Here's what I found on the internet. Sounds adequately offical to me although I have no idea what any of it means other than the 4CY and 3431 CC.

DRB 4CY,3431CC,DYNA,DAIHATS98/3200

There is not emmisions tag on the firewall, and one does not exist as far as I have ever seen on the diesel' . there is a statement on the door frame tag about meeting all federal safety regs.

Good Luck,

Michael

Hi Hog,

This is the first time I've read this thread--didn't think it applied to me :) . I have yet to receive the paperwork from Toy, but now you've got me wondering about my info. If I remember right from my mother's 1978 240D Mercedes, there is an emissions label for USA diesels that just states "non-catalyst"--meaning I assume no spark plugs. Dunno if that helps you.

From what I've read and folks I've talked to GOOD luck on toyota giving you a letter. Just take it to a RI and be done with it. I thought it's only something like $200 and they bond it and good to go. 100% legal.

Wesintl, I'll consider your advice seriously.

Thanks B. I'm still in need of the info from the door post plate from an 85 giving the model code and the certification statement.

I'm not really sure what you think your after.. The model is BJ70 LV MRK which is the landcruiser model ala FJ40 LV stamped on the vin plate in the engine compartment. I'm not sure what you mean by certification statment? "This vehicle conforms to all applicable federal motor vheicle stafety standard in effect on the date of manufacture shown above" The door plate has a vin and GVW ratings and date of mfg.

Other than that there is nothing else. I would forget about the Toyota letter and go the regular route that is tried and true from others in the forum.

I know what I'm after, and you just gave it to me. Thanks! I'd also appreciate the name of an importer in the Vancouver/Blaine vicinity, if anyone knows of such a business. Thanks again.

Ok glad I could help  Was is the BJ70 LV or the certification statment? or both?

Wesintl,
Yes, I was looking for both the model code and the certification statement.
NorCal,
Great, I'll e-mail him right away. thanks much to both of you, Bret

Just aircared today as the insurance is due in short while. 0.11 reading out of an allowable 30.00. No dyno test for the diesels any longer with aircare. They take it to 1500 rpm and do a straight opacity test.
