I am making progress....slowly but surely. Here are some shots of the rebuild work on the 8274. Everything was disassembled, washed in the parts washer, then blasted with magic skat (crushed glass). The painted parts got 2-3 coats of nason primer, two coats each of urethane paint, then 2-3 of high gloss clear coat...over about 6 days. The grey coat is something like a metallic gray, from a mitsubishi montero book...I should post the paint code.

The motor housing is painted with SEM high gloss rust inhibitor. The winch line drum got the same paint. It is hard as hell and will resist rust over time.

The motor housing got new brushes.

I should be reassembling later this week.

The SM420 was also disassembled and is scheduled for rebuilding. I have a complete rebuild kit in the mail (e.g. bearings, gaskets, syncros, and a small parts bag). While painting up the 8274, I thought....why not do this case as well...same paint.

This tranny case was really too large for my sandblast cabinet, so I opted to use a needle scaler for initial clean up. First I scrubbed it in the parts washer. I then used the needle scaler. My wife picked up this tool for me (with a lot of hints) from northern tool. It is my new favorite tool.....way better at descaling rust, paint and debris than other tools. Well...let me qualify that. The needle scaler is great for rough and ornate parts like a tranny housing. On flat surfaces a sanding wheel would do fine. Anyway....it runs at 90psi and 5cfm.

My friend Mike likes bright shiny objects and I am trying to entice him to buy the SM420 from me.....so the paint is drying...and I'll clear coat it several times before starting the rebuild. With any luck maybe he'll bite.

nice work man:cheers: how did you like the needler?

I was really surprised at how nicely it worked. I mean it is not comparable to a stripping disc, and doesn't get down to bare/clean metal. But, it pops paint off cast iron really easily...very effective for primer set up on small, highly contoured surfaces. =If you have a compressor and do such descaling, it is really a handy tool.

I plan on taking it to my frame in a few weeks.

How much for the 420?

I finished buttoning up the 8274 last evening at Rabid's house. I think it came out pretty good for an old winch. New parts include the lower housing gasket kit, new brake rebuild, new thrust bearings, gaskets and such.....as well as really thorough cleaning of the motor housing, inner coils, all solenoid connections as well as new motor brushes. I have yet to add the new sticker kit from Warn. Loads of new paint......everything works great....and will likely develop a new California patina after the first run through a mud puddle.
