So after seeing the trailer build from a 60, this got me thinking about building one out of an 80. I have a friend that is parting out 3 of them so carcasses would not be a problem. I just did not want to do an engine compartment trailer, but also wanted the back section for storage and to keep the gas tank for fuel. I thinking this would be a major PITA and maybe heavy but it would be major cool.

Post up your thoughts.

My 60 trailer is built on the rear section of the frame, keeping the original gas tank in place. The front section was mated to the rear body section. Something you can do as well, but you want more storage.
Looks like you have a plan, it will be unique, and thats the best part. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

You really are looking for the next project! It's a cool idea and I bet it hasn't been done with an 80. I think that you can really whittle the weight down quite a bit during the build as well.

When is the next meeting?

Your build got me thinking but I own an 80. I was also looking craigslist for truck trailers and got the idea of wanting a gas tank too. There where no toyota bed trailers and then thought, hell lets build one! I am also thinking about doing the same thing you did but with the 80 body. Mating in the roof will be difficult but worth it.

Yes, looking for the next project. Whatever it ends up being, it will not be light, which concerns me. Cool factor is a must though. Next meeting is Tues. Hope to see ya there.

If I was doing this, I'd make sure that the trailer was long enough inside to sleep in. So I'm thinking what you have mocked up may be a tad short. Neat idea though.

If you cut out the firewall, you'll be able to sleep in it. The more I think about this, the more I like it!

That's pretty cool Jeff. My only concern would be weight, but you could certainly strip it down. And I second making it long enough to sleep in. Holler when you are ready.

there was one around here parked in a field.
passenger compartment was probably cut in half.
Kinda looked like an open rickshaw. (evidently not finished)

You pic above suggests that the axle would be too far back if you were to load up the front though, no?

Agree. I shortened it up a little and also made one just out of the engine compartment.

I would keep as much of the passenger compartment as possible for good space and shorten or eliminate the hood end (which may also help with having frame members to weld on/with). Easy to make a waterproof firewall I would think.

(did anybody dare say yet that these things look ugly as all hell..... I won't.... :) )

its like a teardrop, but in all the opposite ways.

another for retaining cargo (rear of wagon) space and stopping at the firewall.

Like this?

looks better to me, and very functional but what makes you think the rear end will match the size of your front cut? Those guys aren't exactly a straight box. Would likely be much harder to plug the front hole that way than if you cut at the firewall, although admittedly the latter might be too much length in front of the axle.
Take a pic and cut off the hood and see what the proportions look like?
Or just cut right before the rear doors as in your last pic and simply plug the hole with a big flat sheet without window etc. That should not be too bad.
But of course if you could fit in the rear end that would be terrific.

Or join 2 80s cut right behind the rear doors. Fill in the wheel wells on the front section.

Two rears no side door and long enough to sleep in ;)... Hatches and sliders all the way around

I like the idea of having the side doors for easy access to things, but if you have the hatches on both sides you really wouldn't need the side doors and you could weld them shut and make it so that you had access through the windows somehow? Maybe something like Kevin w/ wagongear is making???

I guess the big question is can you mate up the rear ends easily? If not you could always just cut right behind the front seats and keep the B pilar so you had room to sleep in, and weld up a flat panel.

I really like where this is headed. :hhmm:

Dude, I like that! I pimp'd mine out! Ahhhh, the power of paint! :grinpimp:
