Looking at Jan's rebuild, I think you are right, yours is an early version. Odds are he has more info on specific parts and costs involved.

Here is his for sale thread from a few years ago.

Bloody typical, I put the external hard drive in a safe place before travelling to the UK, so bloody safe I cannot find it!!!

So drawing on the old grey matter, one of the things that denoted my replacement box as being pre 94 was the two 24mm (IIRC) screw in switches on one side. On my 94 version both are drilled and threaded to accept switches. One operates the reverse lights and the other which had a simple plug operates a switch (same type as reverse) only when selecting 5th gear.

My replacement box came from a 92, it had the transfer with it. I was originally told by the seller it was from a 94, but after pushing about the 5th gear switch place being there but not drilled and tapped, and the fact the speedo drive on the transfer was cable and not electric he conceded 92, why he was 'economical with the truth' I do not know? He did say it had been reconditioned and there was evidence of a strip down, I have noted that that the two springs on either side of the shifter seem to be placed wrong? The lever should be slightly biased to the 1 - 2 gears when at rest, mine is biased towards 5 - R, can make it easy to miss a shift when moving between 3 - 4, the stick trying to get to reverse. Other than that I must say it feels OK to drive, without doubt though the synchromesh even on this rebuilt early unit can be obstructive on occasions (I am still experimenting with different oils),hence the IIRC the three revisions of this transmission by Toyota.

So back to the switch, if the switch boss towards the front of the gearbox is not drilled then go for circa 92. I know you would like to have everything ready before embarking on this but, could you not just strip and then measure up the parts you are not sure about and ask for them to be sent? Also looking at the left side of the box Cyclosteve has put up, it again shows the undrilled switch box, adding more evidence to it being an early version.

One warning I can give you when stripping, when pulling the shift rods springs and ball bearings can pop out of all sorts of places, it took me about an hour to find one ball bearing and then another hour to find out where it came from!!

When I find the drive I will see what I can get from it re I D..ing the boxes, sorry for not being able to offer more at the moment.

regards

Dave

Friends,

I made an edit to my pedal page. I finally found a solution for permanently mounting the white electrical module that wouldn't fit with the clutch pedal installed.

This is post #45 on page 3.

There wasn't enough space for another attachment so I referenced this post for how to modify the bracket to make it work.

Shifter Tunnel Modification

HUGE NOTE: For those of you with RHD, the transfer case shifter and tie rod is COMPLETELY different on the manual! So if you re use your auto transfer case, you still need to get a replacement transfer case lever and tie rod! Order this with your transmission. :)

I dreaded this part from the moment I start the swap. I have no fab skills and I had no idea how I would tackle it.

Luckily, I had a buddy who was super excited to help me out.

First, I kept my auto tunnel plate assembly and cut everything on it until it matched the shape of the shifter layout.

PLEASE NOTE!!! I screwed up and cut off the lower bracket because I thought i only needed that part so I could mount my centre console. DON'T CUT OFF THE LOWER CENTRE CONSOLE BRACKET MOUNT LIKE I DID!

This method (which I shall call the "Billy Method" ) has two huge benefits:

1: You can keep the lower mounting bracket for the centre console.
2: You utilize capture nut locations already on the truck.

We then used 6mm 1.0 thread pitch clips like so to bolt on the shifter boot after marking out the bolt locations on the tunnel and drilling the holes:

We only used these clips on the 3 lower bolt locations (around the transfer case shifter)!

We then used metal screws for the upper two bolt locations (around the 5 speed shifter) and cut out a piece of rubber mud flap so that the upper part of the boot had something to butt up against.

End result turned out better than I thought!

Notice that I had already cut off and painted the lower bracket... again, don't do this if you use this method.

Thanks Billy!
Gday mate have you got any more pics of this shift modification? Cheers

Can someone comment on weather or not h151 equipped 80 series have clutch start cancel switches?

I have not yet found a part number for the switch on the clutch bracket, anyone got pictures or part numbers?

I've got a H150F in my 80. it's a 5-speed manual with differences being that the 1st and 2nd gears are lower ratio than the H151F and the input shaft is a fine spline compared to the coarser splined shaft of the H151F.

I've never driven an 80 with an auto gearbox - most 80's in Aus have manuals, whereas in the USA all local market 80's were LX450 config with auto boxes I think.

I don't care that 1st and 2nd have fairly low ratios as my 80 weights almost 2.7 tonnes and isn't as nimble as a 1 tonne boy racer hatchback. ;-)

Not aware of anything in Oz market 80's with H150F or H151F manual gearboxes that prevents starting in gear. Only the auto gearbox ones (A442F and similar?) would have come with neutral safety switches to prevent starting in gear.

I sometimes forget I've put my 80 in 1st and crank the motor. Pretty obvious it's in gear when it lurches. ;-)

The clutch box which came with mine had the switch. I also wired it into the cruise control setup, so that if I touch the clutch when on cruise, it will disengage. Here are two part numbers. Can provide more wiring info if you like.

No clutch switch in Oz? That is suprising to say the least. How many people get pinched between cars in parking lots down there?

Ah righto I toyodiy'd the part-number of that switch and it's a cruise control thing. I've never seen an 80 here with cruise control ex-factory. Only the VX config and some GX ones got it.

It's used in a *lot* of toyota models though!

Part 88280-14030 (SWITCH ASSY, CLUTCH) was found on the following models:

My 80 is a DX barn-door diesel non-turbo no electric anything base model. What's cruise control again? 8-)

Was cruise a standard feature on all the US market 80's aka LX450's?

As far as I know all had cruise, maybe a few exceptions out there. I still can't figure out why the mini trucks have a clutch start cancel switch and the 80's dont. I have a mini truck switch from similar year and it does not fit in the 80 series dash board.

In Australia only the top-end 80's got cruise. Also most 80's here are diesel not petrol, unlike the USA where all 80's where badged LX450 and were all petrol engined.

The other big difference is a large portion of Oz 80's were factory part-time 4wd not full-time 4wd.

While most, if not all 80's stateside came with petrol motors, cruise, and ATMs, not all are LX450's.

X2, FJ80's were available in '91-'92 in US and Canada, FZJ80's were available '93-'97 in US, and LX450's were available in '96-'97 in US and Canada.

@CycloSteve , would you elaborate on the clutch start cancel switch? How is it wired in and set up, and if not plug n play, how tough is it to wire in? What parts are required and do you have part numbers aside from the switch number you provided?

thank you in advance
