Ok guys, it took a while to diagnose the whine, with Brian’s help down at Otraam as he confirmed an earlier suspicion. The splines are worn causing the whirring noise only when torque is applied. That old shaft is on my bench now, still in good working order just noisy, way too noisy for the type of traveling we do. Anyone want it? Come and get it.

Sadly the whine is still there- my instinct told me two years ago it was gear whine in the t-case. I ignored my instinct. Shame shame shame, everybody knows my name. This shaft is claimed!
