7x diesel series general questions

I have some general questions coming from a not-yet-an-owner-that-is-trying-to-weigh-options-before-purchasing:

And I know that some of these might be considered blasphemy around here, but please bear with me.

)1) What's a typical/average curb weight of a BJ7x?

)2) What sort of highway experience can be expected from a somewhat stock BJ7x? Meaning, I know that tires and suspension/lift and all that have a bearing, so I am asking after one with little or no lift, and 'boring' tires. How's the ride? How's the mileage? Where is top speed without killing anything?

With respect to modifiability and offroadworthiness, I have no questions - that's abundantly clear here.

)3) What are these 'lockers' everyone's talking about?

Thanks in advance for considered replies - I am a rank newbie driving a Mitsubishi Montero that's just not cutting it.
 
With a 2" lift BJ-7x with Toyota 16" steel wheels and somewhat 'boring' P235x75R16 AT tires, gives a 10% 'overdrive', i.e. when the speedo says 100kph, it's actually doing 110kph. This 110kph actual speed seems to be the 'sweet spot' for a comfortable cruise and turns a respectable 10L/100km fuel economy. It will cruise at that speed all day in 5th gear up and down hills with no need to downshift.
Empty weight is 4310 lbs
Gross weight is 5430 lbs
It rides like a truck. If I want a smooth comfortable ride, I get in a car.

Lockers were OK in high school, I guess, but where I work we just use a coat rack.
 
Okay. That works out to around 23 miles per gallon, which is lovely. 100kph works out to around 60-65 miles per hour, which again is lovely.

Now I just need to find one. That I can afford. To import. Somehow.

They can be made quite comfortable with the right tyres and tyre pressure.

Lockers are differential lockers. They "lock" the 2 wheels on each axle so they can only rotate at the same speed,front and rear. Normally on older style part time 4wds like these only one wheel at the front and rear are pushing the vehicle in 4wd.
The lockers mean you can keep going even if 2 wheel leave the ground.
Lockers can be after market or factory,but the factory lockers are the most sought after for low maintenance and reliability.
You can only use them on slippery surfaces.
If you come across one with lockers,get it just for the bling and resale value:D

Not to be confused with centre diff locks which is something on newer models.

Like MJG says ,the 100-110kph, maybe a 120 kph(if you have a 6 cyl diesel:D) is the appropriate top speed.
These are as close as you can come to a vehicle that has reasonable comfort and have heavy duty offroad credentials

The maintenance is highish but low cost and easy to do yourself. They like lots of oil/filter changes,grease ups
 
Change the oil and filter at 5000km, keep an eye on the coolant, and dont drive like a comlete tool, and it'll probably outlive you!

Sorry for the delay in responding to your questions.

I am in ALMOST CANADA, Idaho, u.s.s.a. It may not be Canadia, but we do have some awfully rough places, many of which I traverse with some regularity.

I want a diesel for fuel-option reasons, as well as fundamental economy reasons.

I want something that functions well on the road, as I am a one-carriage person, and as often as I am on some client's twelve mile mudpit/driveway, I am also down in what passes for urbanity with paved roads. And traffic. Faster traffic.

I want a Land Cruiser, specifically a 7x, because they are awesome. Period. Smallish, powerful, reliable, maintainable, durable, and utilitarian.

I sold my SAAB for a reason, if you get my drift. Great car. For places that have 100% smoothe paved roads. Which we don't. The Montero works, but it's just too damn big, and it's a gasser. Sure, I could put a diesel in it, but if I am going to spend effort and money, I would rather put it into something that I /like/.

You need do some research regarding owning these types of vehicles in the USA. There are some good reasons why there are not so many your way.
The importation into the USA is a bit of a lottery, some get through ,most dont.

On the other hand you may have some special knowledge or be in a particular situation;)
 
Thanks for the update. Now that we know more we as a hole can better help. Like previously mentioned, getting these into the US is/can be a problem. The ones that are not a problem are the BJ-70's that where built for the canadian market. This from model year 85-87 I believe. These are no problem to import, just find a knowledgeable Registered Importer that can do the paper work and such. You can try it by yourself by researching the DOT and EPA and Customs sites and talking to the border agents nearest you. Other models of 70's do find their way in but these are/can be a whole new can of worms. I assume that you have already searched on here about importing these to the US. Every now and then a Canadian model comes on the market here in the US.
