'77 FJ40 For Sale in Maine (Hard top installed and More Photos!)

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately, and I'm afraid I may have to sell the 40. She's a '77, and a good overall driver, but no means perfect. It runs well, 4 hi and low work perfectly, and shifts smoothly. ODO says 125k, but it said that when I bought it too ;) I'd guess around 130-40k, but I honestly don't know for sure. There is some rust poping up here and there on the body, but nothing too serious. (although, to be honest, the rear spring mounts are going to need attention soon. The rest of the frame is solid.) It could still easliy be repaired without too much work. I have the hardtop and doors as well, in good condition.
Some of the good points are:
  • new exhaust
  • recetly rebuilt weber carb
  • runs cool even on hot days
  • both heaters work great (front was restored with one of shane's kits in Feb)
  • custom maple dash
  • custom sycamore tailgte
  • good seats
  • drives tight
  • just adjusted the valves last week
What it needs:
  • driver's side brake caliper is stuck
  • automatic choke on weber doesn't automatically choke
  • rear spring mounts could use some attention
I'm going back and forth on selling it as is, or doing the repairs and then selling it. I'd replace the front calipers, pads, and rotors, then bleed the whole system. As for the choke I don't always trust auto chokes, and would just convert it back to manual(40's shouldn't have automatic anything, imo :)) If anyone is interested, I'd encourage them to come up and take a look. I'm fairly flexible for the time being. I, as well as the car, am located in Portland, ME. I'm thinking of asking around $12k if I go through and replace the brakes and choke, but I'm definatly willing to talk. I don't see many in New Englnd in this sort of inbetween condition. Most of them are essentially parts cars, or restored to better than new condition. I'm also open to partial trades for vintage mopeds, vespas, motorcycles, boats, etc, or even an old Volvo 122. Let me know what you've got. Please feel free to PM me for my phone number and e-mail, I'm happy to answer any and all questions. Here are a few photos (sorry about the kayak, I just got in from a paddle)

nice truck but you have to name a price.

Sorry, it's in there. I'm asking $12k if I go through and do some repairs, but I thought I'd through it up here before hand just incase anyone would want to to do them on their own. I'd really love to see this one go to a good home.

sorry the formating on my browser is all screwed up and i couldn't see it

Bump for a lower price...$11,000 if I repair the brakes, or $10k as is (mud special;)). Feel free to call me with any questions 603.817.1538. Thanks!

Sorry about the formatting, it looks fine on my screen, so I'm not exactly sure what's wrong. I suppose that my screen name is not helping me sell the car. When I joined the forum, it just thought it haid a good ring to it. The truck really isn't nearly as rusty as some of the others I've seen in the North East, and I'd encourage anyone who's even remotly interested to come by and take a look at the car in person, I promise you won't be dissapointed. It's a good truck, and I really don't want to sell it, but the clutch went south on my MG this past spring, and I really want to get her fixed. It's an engine out job, and I just don't have the space or time to do it myself, so I begrudgingly have to pay someone else to do it.

Bump for an adjusted carb, fixed choke, and new points! I just drove the car out to the white mountains this weekend and she ran like a champ! I was however, carefully looking the body over yesterday, and found that the rust is a little worse than I thought. It's still far better than a lot of the trucks I see around here though. Any whoo, I'm willing to bend some more on the price becuase of this. If I don't get any takers soon, I may put it on evil-bay... $9500 maybe? Give me a call or send me an e-mail with any questions, or for more pictures. XCmtnBiker4Life<at>Mac<dot>com.

New Photos on a lovely fall afternoon, I'll post some better ones tommorrow when the weather clears! I'll try to put up a few of the various parts that go with the car as well. Still asking $9500 mud price...but make me an offer

The black on the door isn't paint, it's part of a magnetic logo the PO had for his company.

how bad is the rust?
under the plated corners, doors, etc?
frame?

The frame has surface rust, but it's not delaminating anywhere. The worst spots on the frame are the rear spring mounts. They seems solid, but the are delaminating along the edges. I posted a picture of one in the first post. The rear crossmember is okay, but I would wire brush and seal it soon. This was my plan, but life just got in the way. Since I knew I was going to sell it, I wanted to leave everything in honest condition.
There was rust under the diamond plate corners, but it was cut out. The cut area were sanded and primed to seal the remaining metal. The plates on the rockers were there when I bought the car. The passenger side seems fine, but the drivers side seems a bit rusty underneath. The door bottoms on all doors are fine.
The worst spot on the body is just below the fuel filler doors. It still seems kinda solid, but in all honesty you could probably shove a screwdriver through it. It would go into the wheel well, rather than the cabin. The front floors were POR'd. The passenger side is perfect, but the drivers side is a little thin near the seat frame, and there is some "repair" in that area as well. Nothing is through yet though. As for the rear of the tub, the floors are solid, but there are a few spots of rust under the rear quarter windows where the wheel well meets the body, as well as two spots that were sealed under the jump seats.
If you're interested, I would highly encourage you to come by and take a look at the truck. It's always so much better to see and discuss this stuff in person. I've tried to list all the bad, which might make the truck sound worse than it actually is. It really is a solid truck, and it's never let me down. It's not a show truck, but it's by no means a beater either. It's just a solid driver, which is exactly why I bought it.

Bump for a few new photos. It's still for sale fellas. Been stored indoors since they started laying down salt on the roads. I just installed a new 4 row radiator over the holidays as well (engine shot was taken during installation, hence the lack of a radiator and a c-clamp on the thermostat:eek:)

Still for sale?

Hi, I'm in New Brunswick and am interested if your truck is still for sale. Your last price was $8500, did that include the repairs? Also, the front fender looks bent under in the photos. Was it in an accident?

Look forward to hearing from you. My number is 506-645-1448 if you want to call.

Bump for springtime! Last chance at this price before I dive in and replace the front calipers, master cylinder, and a few other things

Okay, 2500 views and a year later:-)... I really need to sell the FJ40! $4900 takes it! give me a call 603-eight one seven - one five three eight.
