Hello All,

I'm rebuilding my '77 FJ-40 and I'm considering installing either a 1FZ-FE with a R151F 5 speed or, depending on availability and price, a 1HD-FTE Turbo Diesel with a H150 5 speed. First, what is the availability of either of these units as a complete set, where should I look? And, I have a PTO from a 2F, 4 speed power train that I would like to install assuming that it would bolt up to either of the 5 speed trannies that I mentioned above. I don't NEED to install the PTO, just thinking it might be nice. This rebuild is not meant for anything extreme, just a fun summer vehicle to do, at most, moderate 4wheeling. Let me know if you need more info.

You will experience a more timely response to your inquiry if you post it in the
"40- & 55 Series Tech" section.
Good luck ........

Hello,

As many other things, it depends on your location.

You can get a JDM 1HD or a 1HZ engine. The latter uses both the H55F and R151F transmissions. It can be mated to a 40 Series transmission, provided you get the right spline count and bellhousing.

Both the 1FZ-FE and 1HD-FTE engines use the H151F transmission.

However, outside certain markets, the 1FZ-FE engine is only available with an automatic transmission. Integrating this into a 40 Series Land Cruiser is a bit complicated, mostly because of the electronics, but it can be done.

Non-automatic transmission 1FZ-FE engines are easier to swap in. Depending on your location, you might be able to source a carbureted model (1FZ-F) which is even easier to install.

In all these engines, the transmission might be a little too big to fit in a 40 Series, so you might want to get the power train as well, in order to avoid headaches and (maybe unnecessary) fabrication.

Both engines are a tight fit in a 40 Series' engine bay. However, it is a matter of doing it carefully.

Any of them has lots of power and a great ride.

Summing up, confirm availability given your location. Make sure you get the right transmission. And get a complete power train if possible.

Hope this helps.
