76 Transmission VS 77

I have a 76 FJ40 with the stock transmission in it. Just purchased a 77 2F with Transmission and Tcase. There looks like there is a difference in the two Tranny's? In a book there looked like there was a H41 and H42? How do I tell the difference and does it matter? I assume the 77 will bolt up to the 76 tranny?

bolt pattern should be the same.

You don't have three speed F do you?

I don't think so. I know the one in the 76 is a four speed. I was told by the PO that the 77 was also a 4 speed.

The three speed trans has a circular mating surface with an assymetric bolt pattern to the bellhousing, whereas the 4 speed has a "8" shaped surface and a symmetric bolt pattern.
