Hi all hoping i can gain some insight from this forum. I have my HJ75 1988 ute im doing up and two things i need to do is:

1. Replace speedo cable. Is this hard? and has anyone got any tips for me etc...

2. my a/c unit is weird. I dont get any change in temp from hot or cold and I was wondering if it could be a fuse or what it could be? I checked my fuses and i got the one that actually gives it power and replaced that which fixxed the problem of the a/c not starting but i noticed i didnt have a fuse in the Heat space on the diagram. I was wondering if this is the reason why i get no hot or cold. any help would be appreciated. Thanks heaps

Speedo cable is easy, although its a little cramped for big guys like me.

Tip 1 remove the dash and undo the cable at the back.Go for a short drive and see if the cable is turning. If its not you can be pretty sure its the cable.

Tip2 Tie a piece of electrical wire to the old cable at the dash end ,about 2 meters long.Unattach it at the gearbox and start pulling it out.
Use the piece of wire you attached to help pull the new cable through the difficult parts.

You dont need to use a landcruiser cable, hilux or any Toyota cable long enough will do.

Is the blower fan working?
Are the slide controls on the instrument panel connected and working?
Does the compressor start turning when you switch on the themistor?
Has the gas been changed in recent times?

Cheers mate. As for air con:

1. The blower motor when i turn the fan on it blows does this mean the blower motor is working?

2. All controls fitted correctly and working

3. The compressor i havent checkd that but that is near the starter motor correct?

4. That would be a negative i wouldnt imagine the gas has ever been changed i didnt think this would effect the hot air however?

I read somewhere if coolant in the radiator is low this may effect it? The only other thing i thought it could be was:

On the passenger side where the fan plugs in to a small circuit like thing i found out that the circuit like thing was all corroded. The aircon still turned on so didnt think it was an issue. Would this be the thermostat?

Thanks for all the help. much appreciated.

Yes if you can hear the fan and feel the air flow.

Nope, its alloy coloured, has a black wire going into it and 2 alluminium pipes that run around the engine bay and go inside the cabin. When the aircon is working they become very cold to touch after a while.
I forget where the compressor is on your engine but it is up front and runs off belts like the fan and alternator.
When the aircon is switched on, a magnetic clutch is activated and it begins to turn the aircon compressor.

No,it wouldnt affect the hot air.The hot air comes from warm coolant directed through the heater matrix under the dash.
The heater controls pull on a valve in the engine bay at the rear of the engine,on the firewall. If someone moves the heater slide control ,you should see it open and close.

The heating and aircon are 2 separate systems. If one fails, the other will still work unless its something to do with the blower fan or controls (which was why I asked)

Yes low coolant will affect the heater temp. But there are also other things such as a faulty thermostat,a blocked heater matrix,or a faulty heater valve switch (which I expained earlier)

The thermostat is underneath the lower radiator hose pipe where it bolts onto the engine. You remove the hose and pipe and the thermostat can be pulled out with your fingers.
If it was faulty you would probablly be experiencing engine overheating symptoms and coolant overflow.

Im not sure what the circuit thing you were looking at is,but it is definately not the thermostat.

The heater matrix can usually be cleaned by removing the 2 heater hoses that go into the firewall and back flushing it with the garden hose.
