I have to replace the dizzy on a 74 fj 40. The delco dizzy is worn out that I put on in 74. From reading other posts it looks like a cast off from an 86 fj60 will work if the side plate is dented and the wires are hooked up correctly. Is the anything else to be aware of? thanks brent

yes much more than that. you need new coil and igniter, denteded side cover, and some other. Do a search on my name for 60 series distributor.

If you want a replacement, I have a dizzy for sale too.

You have many other choices that might not even be as challenging as converting to an FJ60 ignition with igniter (i.e. vacuum advance with or without Pertronix). I'd be ok getting into a PM on this with you!!!!

I have all the orginal parts that came off the 60, so maby that should do it? thanks brent
Yes, that is all that is needed.

The coil&ignitor off the FJ60 will mount on the cyl head, the engine side cover swaps on while the dissy is removed, and the electronic dissy drops in & is retained by one bolt.

There is one wire to connect to ignition power.

See Coolerman's great website or build thread for pics of the install on an F engine.

I would not mount the coil and ignitor unit on the cylinder head. It will get too much vibration and heat. THe newer 60 series started mounting them on the inner fenders because the heat/vibration lead to early demise of the ignitor pack.

Put it where your stock coil went and extend the wires to fit.

Coolerman and I had long discussions about where to mount the pack and although his is mounted on the cylinder head, that is only for initial start-up and he plans to move it over to the fender once he knows everything works.

He will have to splice in longer wires to reach from the ignitor pack to the dizzy when it is mounted on the fender. Not a big deal. I cut the colored wires in half, and spliced in jumper wires so I woud not cross connect anything. I used soldier and heat shrink on the wires. Water proof and a superior connection over using those plastic tubes for connecting wires. This way, oxidation/rust will not be a problem.

Here is the link to my write up with links to Coolerman's site. IH8MUD Forums - View Single Post - fj60 60 series distributor - ignition install write-up

its a couple of bucks, but I second the HEI alternative.....no more ignitor and its real purdy too. Put one on my 76 and will put one on the 79 as soon as Dr. Frankenstien finishes.
