i have a converter box in my 80 and its wired to the 7 pin plug. im trying to get the 7 pin plug i installed in the bumper to work but the only lights that come on is the running lights. does anyone have any idea why? i know its not alot of info but i dont know much other than what the instuctions i got with the 7 pin plug tell me. the 7 pin/4 pin is wired right as far as i can tell but i cant seem to get the lights to work

Need a little more to go on. Have you taken a multimeter and checked the pins in the plug?

Here's a good writeup to help you identify the pins: http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx

I'd start by checking the ground pin - make sure you have continuity between that and the chassis. Then check the voltage between the ground pin and the marker & blinker pins with the lights on, blinkers on, etc.

If that all checks out, then its on to the trailer.

My first rule of trailer light wiring: be sure of the ground(s). Lots of funky things can happen when the grounds are nfg. I'm to the point where I run a ground wire system from the plug to each light and do not rely on the trailer's structure for any grounding.

Next, I've never had good life span from those converter boxes. I seem to get about a year out one and then it's toast. A couple of years ago I gave up and put a series of relays in a watertight box instead. Now the trailer lights aren't even on the vehicle light's fuse(s).

The last two 7 pin connectors (trailer side) I bought (Northern Tool) for my trailer builds were wired wrong. The only way to correct it is to use a volt meter and ignore the color codes on the trailer side connector. It took a little while to get it right, but they work right now. Just all the color codes are wrong!
Chinese Products at their best!

My tow rigs have factory wired trailer connectors at the bumper and both were wired the same and correctly!
