I've searched and cant find anything solid for answers. I have an 10/87 fj62 all manual windows, doors and mirrors. I'm getting 13.5 volts @ idle @ the battery posts, 11 to 12.5 @ idle with everything on, and 13.5 @ 2000 rpm with everything on. When I remove the positive terminal and read the terminal directly (negative lead to any ground, and positive lead to disconnected positive cable) I get 14 and change. The truck runs @ idle with batt disconnected but it feels like it will die @idle with lights on it also runs wile disconnected and lights on with any kind of rpm.s 1000 or more. OH, 2nd new battery in 2 weeks, I suspected the new one and swapped it again today. What I found in my search was written for a 60. do the same numbers apply for a 62? thanks-Joe

Joe;

U should see 14.2 volts at 1000 rpm with every thing off and battery connected to alternator.

It is a very bad thing to disconnect the battery with engine running; cuz, the alternator will have no load on it and it (the regulator and diodes) could blow.

Assuming u have a fairly new/ good battery - I am thinking that ur alternator is not working properly.

When starting from a cold engine, the alternator voltage will go to around 15 volts and gradually drop to around 13.7 volts as the battery charges. A proper working system will show around 14 volts.

How do I do the direct (extra) charging wire from alt to batt, and do I need an inlile fuse? I would think so.
Do I just go from the (nut and bolt) connector on the alt to the pos side of the batt? The reason I ask is today I grounded the neg side of the volt meter on the alt body and with the pos on the (nut) connector I got my 14+. I ran a jumper between said connection and pos batt and saw improvement on my dash volt meter.Even without the jumper wire I got 14.03 at the (charging) fuse in the dash. TTT please

Quick question. I know my voltage regulator is bad on my stock 88' fj62. Is it an internal regulator?

At driving rpm's i'm getting more the 17-18 volts so i know it's bad.

Your alternator should have an internal regulator.
