6 hour oil change

So today I thought it would be a good day for an oil change, little did I suspect what I was in for. A little history: Rob and I swapped a donour 2H (thanks Steve) into Al Donnely's old HJ60. At the time the oil and fuel filters looked OK and we were just trying to get the rig running. So today I decided an oil change and fuel filter change was i order. Drain the oil, go to remove the oil filter... it spins... and spins... and spins. OK, this is kind of weird, maybe I should try to pry the filter down a bit or I should call Rob and see what he thinks. Call Rob, he doesn't give me good news. Best to remove the four 12mm bolts that hold the filter on, then try to get the filter off on the bench. I suggest after I get the filter bracket off I swap it for the one sitting on the engine stand (old motor). Of course, a new gasket would be required, so I carved one out of gasket material. Looks like it it's all working out fine, pumped some Rotella into her, changed the fuel filter (thank God that came off without incident) and she's purring like a kitten. This has been my longest oil change to date.

There is another contender in that contest, Pawel called me on Sunday afternoon just after I left my house asking me if I was busy. After some small talk he tells me that he's doing an oil change on his truck and the filter is seized on, since all my tools are in New West, and both Pawel and I live in Poco it was silly to go there and come back. So I pop by to have a look and Pawel and Robert are both trying their luck at taking the thing off with no success. Used one of those rubber band wrenches - useless, a pre-war time adjustable oil filter wrench - that bent nicely, even a ratchet strap failed but almost did some other damage. Crappy tire was close enough and still open so I popped by and found an oil filter wrench that after a bit of hammering managed to fit. Once on, a pry bar against the starter was necessary to finally remove the old filter off. That was a fun way to kill over 2 hours, so I feel your pain, lucky you had "spare" parts.
 
a long screw driver pounded thru the filter works, or i have a HUGE set of channel lock pliers that never fail .

do you guys put grease on your filter gasket when changing the oil ?
 
The long screwdriver is nice unless it's really seized on, then it acts like a great can opener and you have a much longer day. As for the gasket, not grease, just a bit of new oil so that it doesn't seize up like that.
So Phil, figured out why it was spinning and not coming off?

Not yet, I've still got the thing sitting in my vise. The only way this thing is coming apart is with a hack saw, this will be very messy. I suspect (or Rob does) that the filter was cross threaded and either the threads on the filter or the threaded tube are stripped. This is/was a Toyota filter. I was going to grease up the new filter, until I took the plastic off and saw that Toyota had pre greased it for me.

I ended up buying one of these after the strap type wrench worked fine for the first filter but wouldn't budge the second filter. Never had a problem since buying this one.

important I guess is to use no tools when installing the new filter. Just tighten by hand. I use some nice rubber gloves that grip and you tighten it up firm by hand. Do not do anymore with a wrench after. Filters don't need to be that tight. I have never had an issue with this method.

Oil filter spinning in situ? Thanks goodness you had a spare filter housing. I'd say something is stripped....again maybe put on to tight. Lets hope it is the filter only though. Sometimes cheap filters only have a few threads to catch.
 
I may have the stack of receipts that came with that Cruiser still. Most of the receipts were from Midas Brake and muffler.
Things like a powersteering flush, transmission flush, brake fluid flush, rad flush, full brake job, etc.
there was about $2000 in recent receipts for a bunch of over priced, useless stuff done to a rotted out wagon with no frame and bad exhaust.

I just hand tighten. The first filter I did after the importer was supposed to have done an oil change. They were the worst, hence the oil filter pliers. Hand tightening only, my filters still seem to seat really tight. I will soon find out how the Fleetguard filters have seated compared to the OEM filters.

Rubber seals are the same on all filters I have seen. I'm sure they are fine.

Definition of an OEM filter= a filter that mets the standards/specs of a manufacture and picked by the vendor who can do that at the best price per qty. Nothing special IMOP.

I buy Napa filter, Cnd tire filters, fram.......etc. It's a half life engine IMOP(on my trucks) that I had no control over for the first half. Spending big coin on silly things like synthetic and 20 dollars filters only make you feel better, not the engine and hardly buys you any more life on an already well broken in engine. Best advice is just often oil changes, keep the oil fresh(5k kms etc).

I would however use a synthetic if it was a fresh engine that I rebuilt in my ownership. Not a 15-20 yr old JDM with 150k kms or such. Maybe a 40k km JDM I would. And watch those old seals leak :)

I went to fleeguard because of the claimed better filtration - and the better pricing. I still do oil changes on time.

Here in Abby I usually like Husky. Of the 4 stations, only one has pay at the pump.:mad: So most of the time I am now filling at Superstore which I feel is not up to the quality of the Husky diesel. I have noticed black smoke since using their diesel. But I get a few more pennies off my grocery bill. :meh:

John , Diesel is Diesel, some just has more water than others. Where does Western Grocers get their fuel.

Tell me why my engine rpms on Flying J stock diesel drops aound 100 on idle. Something is up - be it the energy content of the diesel or the additives they put in it.

I am sure Western Grocers gets their diesel from the same place as Esso as the same place as Chevron. On the other hand, Husky diesel probably comes from their refinery in PG. Not all diesel is the same just like not all crude oil is the same.

I haven't noticed any difference in the quality of the Superstore diesel in comparison to Husky/Mohawk diesel.
