mdarius... thanks for the info... specifically the night time weather. time to get the wife a new sleeping bag. i had no idea it got that low at night. me? i will just bulk up under my 30 degree bag.

A fleece liner adds 10 degrees to any bag. Also, when I go winter camping I like to pick up a couple of boot and shoe warmers from an outdoor store, or Walmart around here, and stick 'em in my sleeping bag. It helps.

its a pretty popular route? we will have delorme maps for every state so if we get "side tracked" all the better...

I haven't travelled Memphis to New Orleans for a long time but that looks like the Interstate route to me and that means 18-wheelers; lots of them. The route from New Orleans is Interstate all the way to Houston so more 18-wheelers. You're taking 290 from Houston to Austin and that is mostly 4-lane divided and heavily traveled. The Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham, TX is a nice 1-2 hr diversion if you have time after you leave Houston.

Shoot, looks like the magic's gone from your trip. I would have advised to go to Canyon de Chelly (Eastern AZ), Grand Canyon's little brother. Navajo land, very quiet and inspiring.
Anyway, I drove the I-10 between New Orleans and Houston in September 2005 during the Katrina aftermath and the view from the interstate crossing through swamps and bayous is just unreal.
