I've been looking at the new 5 speed transmissions for an 87 60 series and I'm wondering how much sense it makes. It looks like you gain a few miles per gallon, lower RPMs at high speeds and a lower gear in 1st for off road. Are there other advantages and do you guys think its worth the expense? Also who would you have do the work locally? I have very little experience and only a few tools otherwise I would do it myself.
Thanks again for your insight.

Lower first gear for better offroad or off the start boat pulling, etc.
Overdrive for the highway when not pulling a hill ;)

John Groves (local Cruiser mechanic/parts/restorer) could do the install with no problems but I think a tranny swap in the garage is actually quite doable. You would have to get a price from John to weigh against tackling it yourself. I'm sure we could get some hands to help with the swap, it's whether you have the garage space and bench to do the work and a weekend to kill doing it (I would assume 1 day would be enough, but you know how that goes).

Should be a bolt in for '85 and newer 60 series. About 1800 for the tranny and maybe $200 for shifter and miscelaneous. Driveshafts and all that remain the same.. Do some searching here on mud.. If you are pulling that stuff out you might consider a clutch job and rear main seal as well as resealing the t-case and anything else that needs attention..
33's give you a little bit taller gearing but on road suck up a little power.. 4.11's and a 5 speed with the 33's would put you back in the sweet spot. I run 33's and a 4 speed and just can't justify the 5 speed although it would be really nice.

It's a 10/86 Cruiser and by the looks of it a rear main might be needed. Transfer recently serviced by Wheeler so he should be good there. No input on clutch as I didn't drive it but he should be able to access the records and find when it was done last.

If you get the crossmember too I would imagine its 100% bolt in. We could do all the big stuff and you could button up the small stuff on your own... For the record I am on my 3rd engine in a Cruiser that has seen less than 100 miles!! I RULE!!!!!!!!!

I think the Toyota 5 speed is definately worth it and one of the upgrades I want to do with mine. Even with the 383 behind it.
It shouldn't be hard to do if you have a garage that will fit your rig . . . (I don't)
I also have a nice floor jack. And would be willing to help out if we can organize a time.

I greatly appreciate the interest. I'm not planning on buying the rig until late March or early April so the swap wouldn't happen until then. My friend has been letting me take it for the weekend when he's out of town and he continues to pay for repairs along the way which I greatly appreciate :)
