Anyone know of any 4x4 parts stores in Gilbert or East Mesa? I know there are several around Country Club and Broadway, but that's a bit out of my way on the drive home.

I'm specifically looking for a tow strap, nylon 3" by 30', minimum 20,000 lb rating, no hooks. I saw one at Pep Boys yesterday for $59. Are ones from auto stores or hardware stores as good as anywhere else, and is that a good price?

Thanks

David

The best prices we've found for recovery straps as of last month were at 4Wheel parts at Country club and Broadway. Not what you wanted to hear, I know, but the truth none the less.

 If you don't want or have time to drive, order it online.

I'd a said that too. They're the new kids around here, and they are pretty decent. They tried to hire me once, so they might not be all smart! Even so, pretty good guys.

If you go there, ask to speak to John Tabata. Knowledgable and resourceful (i.e. he knows in which catalog to look...). He found a steering stabilizer for Claudia's 40 by the amount of travel the old one had. I know this doesn't sound like a big deal, but after explaining about 17 times on the phone that '...it's not in the stock location for a 72 FJ40...' and hearing back that '...we can only look by extended/retracted distance...', even from Doetsch in El Cajon directly (we even had the Doetsch part number...) it was unexpectedly refreshing to have this issue finally solved in under 10 minutes.

It's so hard to go in there and tell them what you want is what you want and you're not gonna buy what they want to sell you. It's very similar to going into checker and saying that you need a set of small block vavle covers.

"what year and model are they for?"

"69 FJ40"

"Huh?"

"F...J...40... Toyota... Just gimme some friggin center bolt valve covers you asshat!"

It's deffinately refreshing to have someone behind the counter that's not just selling numbers but providing a service.

Just had that enjoyable experience this weekend. The good guys at my regular NAPA didn't have everything I needed for working on Mom's truck. So I was forced into an Autozone and a Checkers. Nothing more frustrating than these conversations:

"I need upper ball joints for a 72 Chevy Pickup, 1/2 ton 2wd, "

"Ok, Chevy lets see (computer typing begins) What year is it?"

 "72"

"1/2 or 3/4 ton?"

 "1/2!"

"2wd?"

 "2wd, yes!

"V8?"

 "yes"

"4 barrel?"

:crybaby: "YES" (remember I'm getting ball joints here)

"Well we have our lifetime warrenty one 39.95 (like I should be impressed with the warranty) do you want one or two?

 "Two" (voice in the head is saying no you imbecile I said joint(s) because I want one)

Same conversation on shocks at the Checkers.

I know, I should learn to follow the script when I'm in these places.

Well said Cliff - I don't like Checkers cause you fall all over the china mini bikes in front of the door :)

Unless you shop at the one by my house where there aren't any mini bikes cause someone drove through the front window the other night and boosted them all for the 2nd time this month....not that I condone theivery of any kind but it makes me smile on the inside.

My favorite was at the local O'Reillys; vehicle a '92 Eagle Summit Wagon (essentially a small minivan); I'm losing air outta one tire, determined with soap and water that the culprit was the valve.

"My tire is loosing air, I need a set of valve cores and the dohickey to remove them?"

Reply: "What vehicle?" followed by "What engine size?"

And before I could say something, the kid already had the engine catalog out looking for valves...

It's like a friggin bell... Pavlov's theory an'chit like that. BLAH BLAH BLAH...Valve...BING

Darwin award- ?

Nah, not severe enough. I thought someone must perish in order to win a Darwin Award - as in removal from the gene pool by (more or less natural) selection?

In my case the kid was eager and meaning well. And I'd say in most cases the what-year-what-vehicle make etc. is very useful, it's just us truck nuts with customized vehicles that throw a monkey wrench into a well-oiled system. I mean, come awn, who in their right mind would put Chevy valve covers on a Toyota :grinpimp: :D

if you go to the phoenix 4wheel parts (the one i work at) talk to Kevin up front he knows his s*** and will be gald to help out us cruiser guys, he's a toyota man himself

My favorite Darwin award was the German zookeeper who was giving an enema to an African elephant. Lets just say the enema had immediate effects, knocked the guy out and he suffocated.
