Does anyone on here have the 4x4 Labs rear swing out bumper on their 1st Gen 4Runner? I am looking for a new rear bumper after getting rear ended and was looking for some feedback from someone who has one. Also, did you get it as a kit or pre-welded? I contacted them about it, but haven't heard back on price pre-welded or as a kit. Thanks in advance.

They list the kit and welded/finished prices on rear bumpers page.

Shoot them an Email and see what they have, picture wise if any and please share. A GIS turned up nothing.:( I am looking to have IPOR make me a one-off rear bumper for my 1st gen, but if 4x4 Labs has one already pre-fabbed, them would be sweet.

I loved the 4x4 labs bumper on my 100

I totally missed the mention of the 1st gens on their website, but heard back from Luke quickly with the details. I am tempted to go with the basic kit for now and add a swing away spare carrier down the road. The problem with that is I am not sure whether the spare will still fit in the stock location until I am ready for the swing away. I am only running 33's right now so they still fit in the stock location. He makes some amazing bumpers!

For those of you who may be interested in a 4x4 Labs rear bumper, here are some pictures that Luke sent me of one of the first 1st gen 4Runner bumpers. Not sure if they have changed much since these were taken, wondering if they extended the side protection further forward to the wheel wells.

Daddy like!

If you get more info from them, can you see if you have to remove the rear crossmember like other trucks, or is it a bolt-on bumper? Looks bolt-on:hhmm:

He didn't tell me specifically, but from the other pictures I have it is bolt on. The basic bumper has a towing crossmember (actually all of them do) that doesn't allow the use of the stock spare tire carrier. This would only really matter if you don't go with a swing away (which I am considering). Sounds like the basic bumper is all set up to add in a tire carrier or any of the other accessories later.

Good luck getting one of his bumpers. Luke is really particular about what he will show interest in and mini and 4Runner bumpers are not one of them. Never has anything in stock and never returns calls or makes anything. Really flakey. Makes the best bumpers but are hard to get

I am not in a big hurry, he told me there would a couple month wait if I ordered one. I don't have the time to weld it up right now anyway.

He just did a big GB in the 80 series forum. I grabbed some cargo baskets from him. I am also staying in touch with him on a rear kit for my 3rd gen. I love his bumpers and have been in touch with him to the last month or so to and I'm hopeful he will get something going for the 3rd gen rigs soon.

I thought he was making a 3rd gen kit, I feel like I saw someone post a 4x4 Labs build for their 3rd gen. Can't find it right now though.

Lurch built one for his 3rd Gen, but he used a cut down 80 kit and he had to do some fab/filler work to make it fit the 4Runner. Luke is working on a legit, for the 3rd gen, kit. Well he is working towards that as far as I know. I think he built one for a 2nd gen that he is likely going to a production kit with it soon.

jynx- Thanks for the clarification, I remembered seeing one on here somewhere, I'll have to look that up again. I am really leaning towards getting one for my 1st gen, just haven't bitten the bullet yet. Probably will take a few months to get anyway.

Did you ever go with the 4x4 Labs?

My 1st Gen is at IPOR, they were going to fab me up a rear bumper, but they are going to put one of Luke's bumpers on mine, will post up pics when it is assembled and installed.

I will for sure.

I have had some comms with Luke and the design has evolved a little from what is on the site, and he says the changes make for a really tight bumper. Nothing big, just tweaks to refine the product.

Some other info from 4x4Labs,

You will probably lose the under body spare option. The tow crossmember interferes with the spare tire placement and causes the spare to hang lower, and a larger spare (33) may not fit at all. There is no frame cutting or grinding involved, it is a strictly bolt-on bumper. The rear 1/4 protection will not go all they way to the wheel well to make a 1-size fits all bumper taking into account any trim options that truck may have on it.

My order is in and once it is assembled and on the truck, I will post pics.

Very nice!

What's up with that exhaust? Doesn't look right.

Yeah, its in the works to get fixed. It was a 2.5” exhaust to replace a badly rusted existing exhaust and to go with LCE headers, it needs to get trimmed a little so it doesnt get smashed;)

Possible that it would bolt up depending on the truck, but might not clear the body panels. The rear and of the frame should be fairly similar I just wouldnt know about panel clearance.
