I saw a post on 80-series tech that implied that the recent 4x4 Labs bumper group buy was going to be resurrected. If that is true, I am somewhat tempted to jump in and completely solidify my position as mall-crawler/poser with a rear bumper/swing out.

Shipping is the killer, though. Would anybody else in the area be interested in this and be willing to split shipping, etc.?

I am still on the fence (and I don't even know if the group buy is extended) but thought I would test the waters.

Do they ship freight or through UPS/FedEx? If the former, you might be able to get it more cheaply by having it sent to a freight terminal. Pretty much all of the major carriers have terminals in Knoxville.

Yeah, I don't know. I bet it would be freight. I'm actually not sure if they're even doing another group buy, so this might be a moot point. When I was talking to IPOR, they quoted me ~$250 shipping to a residence and shipping to a commercial address $30 cheaper. The 4x4 Labs shipment would be from California? I'm scared to see what shipping would be.

About a year ago I looked into getting some Metal Tech sliders. They wanted $380 shipping. For sliders! Yikes!

Just out of curiosity, can I have something shipped to a freight terminal and pick it up from there? I did that a long time ago for some large fiberglass parts, but it was because of size and not weight...

I got my ARB from IPOR and my sliders from Metal Tech. In both cases, I picked them up from freight terminals. I did the same with two different shipments of wood flooring last year. It can be done, but you might want a pickup truck or a trailer depending on how they "package" it.

WRT 4X4 Labs bumpers, are they DIY only? I've looked at their site in the past, but it seemed vague on whether you could get one already put together. I have zero fab/welding skills.

Yes, you can pick things up from a freight terminal. That's what I always suggest to my customers who don't have a business that can receive something large and heavy like an engine. It costs anywhere from $75-$115 extra for me to ship to a home, plus ~$75 liftgate fee if they can't unload it themselves.

They sell kits and completed bumpers both (from what I can tell). The assembled rear bumper + one swing out is around $1400, I think (no discount). I can design/analyze welded joints all day long, but couldn't weld two boards together…

I need to figure out if there is actually a group buy or not.

It looks like there is another group buy. There's a guy named "TNoverlander" who posted in that thread who's looking to share shipping with someone. He says he's in 37912.

IF his 3rd gen rear kit was ready to ship and IF I wasn't trying to finish a shop so I could sell my house and move.... then I'd be in, however I have finally decided that I am going to have to put a hiatus on new projects and purchases until we get some things knocked out.

Yeah, I've been talking with him. We're trying to understand the shipping costs. I need to make a decision...:hmm:

Adding to the confusion. Check out Melt6366/Paul's 60 Series rear bumper. Local guy fabricated with a spare and cooler swing-outs. Trail worthy and reasonably priced too.

Confusion is good! Actually, after going back and forth with Ben (TNOverlander), I decided to go with the 4x4 Labs bumper (and split shipping). The planets were just lining up too well to pass it up.

You'll love it! This is my second 80 series and I've had labs rear bumpers put on both. They rock! Well worth the $$ IMO
