its happened to me twice already but my 4 wheel drive is out. my drivers side hub locks in really smoothly but my passenger side i have to bang on to get it engaged. Both times i have realized that my four wheel drive is not working when i get stuck in a creek or behind my g/f's house(long story). Was just curious if anyone has any ideas

Just got an ARB, with a 8,000lb winch and two IPF's put on today so if i get stuck i could get out but its makes off-roading alot easier if you have 4 wheel drive.

Toyota operating manual, Quote: "You should drive with the hubs in "LOCK" for at least 10 miles (16 km) each month. This will ensure that the front drive components are lubicated."

rebuild your hubs...new parts, et all....

It's very simple to pull apart the sticking hub and re-grease the internal springs and such. That was my problem, fixed my 4x4 for good. Took about 10 minutes for both hubs. One hub should take 5, but do both of them anyway. Have a copy of the FSM exploded view so you put everything back together correctly.
