After digging around trying to find the cause of the 4WD light not working I found that the connector plug was smashed and I have a few wires that I guess need to be reconnected. I am not an auto electrician but from the sender/solanoid there are two wires (sorry yellow and I can't remember the other now) and the loose wires are completely different colours (again I need to dig under and scrap off the grease)

Is there a wire colour diagram somewhere to solve this?
Am I at risk of shorting something I didn't want to, just having a guess?

I'll get under there tommorrow to photograph the shattered wiring if my vagueness is not helping.

I am guessing the solenoid is in series with the light in the dash so when the solenoid closes it completes the circuit and send current through the 4x4 light. I will look at a wiring diagram tonight. How many wires are down at the solenoid? Do you have a multimeter? If you do short something, everything should be fused so the worse is you blow a fuse.
 
Sorry to crash your thread! But my 4wd light doesnt work either, ive havnt looked into it at all but is there a usual problem with the light going out? If yes what is the simple solution?
 
Can you engage 4WD? If not most likely culprit for the 4WD light not working, and you not being able to shift into 4WD, is actually a bad solenoid valve. There are two vacuum solenoid valves on the firewall just to the passenger side of centerline that activate/engage 4WD. One's brown the other blue on a common mounting plate. They're feed from a vacuum line w/ a vacuum time delay in line and feed the transfer case vacuum diaphram that switches the TC from 2WD to 4WD and back. It's common for the 2WD solenoid to wear out as it's on constantly while you're in 2WD (I for get which color is which - 2WD I think is brown). OEM replacement is expensive - like $300+ and you have to replace both as an assembly. A work around is to manually swap the vacuum hoses to the transfer case diaphram. Also check tech for an aftermarket retro that uses industrial 12 VDC solenoids.
