4WD knob for the noobs (and CDL switch)

Usually I have to stop and e in neutral in order to shift in to low range and lock the CDL. I don't think you have to stop if you are just using a CDL switch but it will go in a little easier if you can unload the drivetrain. Sometimes you have to do a little bit of swerving for everthing to lock in.

I don't start out in second, but I am still getting used to driving an automatic on slick surfaces. I have more experience with manual transmissions and starting out in second is to reduce torque at the wheels when you are on a slick surface. This is so that you don't break traction.

I am not sure but I sw some place on mud that the 80 when you put it in 2nd it sitll goes through first then second. the 2nd button may force it to start in 2nd but I haven't read the manual yet.

Cdl will engage/disengage easily while driving, with the cdl switch.
more intel here on related topics. looks to me like the manual is saying to shift OD off (on the shifter) and then tranny i to 2nd for engine braking which seems like it would be very good on slick surfaces. with the caveat that you should be traveling at a low enough speed when shifting to 2nd to not induce a skid.
shifting to 2nd when transfer is in high will put the tranmission into 2nd at 72mph (which seems a very high speed for second and i’m curious when it would normally shift into second in Drive).
shifting to Low when tranfer is in High puts the vehicle into second at 35 mph (which seems much more reasonable to me).
not sure if i amni terpretinf this correctly though. but it would seem to me that getting it into Low at the tranny and leave it in H at the tranfer would be the best method when encountering suddenly slick conditions.
not exactly sure about the need to get it into OD off though.

72mph is the maximum speed in 2nd. I would only recommend shifting down to 2nd at say 40mph or less.

Engine braking works well when it's slippery but the idea isn't to downshift, but rather start off and stay in a low gear. As you mentioned downshifting can upset the balance and cause issues when very slick.

thanks zach. i misread that. they are stating MAX speeds in 2nd. so presumably somewhere there is a chart that shows when it normally downshifts into second and then when it downshifts into second in 2nd gear or Low gear. either way increase braking would be good in 2nd or Low i guess.

can i ask why they tell you to shift out of OD before downshifting to low or 2nd? i guess they don’t want you to be able to be in 4th gear if you downshift into 2nd on the fly i suppose...?

Switching off overdrive is the same as selecting 3rd, so it makes sense to start there before going down to 2nd. I often switch off the overdrive on long hills at highway speeds (both uphill and downhill). In those cases 2nd is too low but 3rd is just right.

super. THANKS for the help here. much appreciated. i think it is starting to come together over here which is great...
APPRECIATE IT.
