I have a question for those of you pulling with a 4cyl rig. My truck is not a Toy but it does have a small 4cyl and I've been told on other forums that the 4cyl wouldn't have enough power to pull a small expedition trailer.

I have a 720 Datsun and I need to put an engine in it. I would rather not spend the time and money rebuilding an engine that doesn't suite my needs so I've come to you all about this. Do you think the z22 will have sufficient power to handle a small trailer or should I try putting a v6 in the truck? I know that the v6 would be a better choice overall but there is a very strict budget here so I can't just go out and buy a 4.3 for it right now and I'm also looking at fuel economy as a daily driver. I believe the truck is running 4.37 gears and I don't plan on going bigger than a 235/75 tire if that makes any difference. My plans for the rig are to explore back country roads and trails across the country and set up where I can.

I appreciate your advice and help with this. This is going to be a real slow build and I would like to do it right the first time and yes, I would probably be better off selling the Datsun and buying a Toy but I need to work with what I have. Thanks.

I have pulled our TrailBlazer trailer (~1000 lbs loaded) with a 2.4L 22R yota engine. I avoid grades like the Grapevine with that combo, but it pulls it fine if I'm not in a hurry. Would I like to have gone with a V6, sure but like you I used what I had. It did work that engine pretty good on the hills that I did pull with it. The Grapevine probably would have shut me down into 2nd gear, and that's no place to be at that speed when the fast lane is going 80.

Brakes should be your bigger concern, does the truck have enough brakes for your combined GVW?

I had a 720 for almost ten yrs. Probably the best truck I've ever had. It had a Z24 dual plug head in it. I
didn't pull a trailer with it, but it had an auto. If you had a small alum trailer, under 750 lbs I'd say you
were okay. Heat will kill an engine while towing, and small 4 cyl don't displace heat very well.
