Anyone got the knuckle centering SST tool for a 40 axle rebuild.

I need to rebuild the axle on the 45 and got to the the part about the knuckle centering tool and paused. Anyone have the SST handy or can inspire confidence on the redneck ruler method if there is a trusty one?

Just not the time to add a hundred dollar tool to the box and as my first 40 series axle I was unsure how necessary it was. You get all kinds of opinions on mud but any personal experiences would be appreciated.

I do have the marlin seals which allow more deflection and looser tolerances but I dont want to do it twice. Already need to redo the 80 axle after just 25k miles :(

I think I'm in the same boat as you Jason, on both instances. Where's the ONSC tool fund when you need it? I'll go half with you if you decide to get one...

Every axle comes from the factory with a pair of knuckles that are already centered. If you are using the same knuckles that came with the axle and keep the shims in the same places you found them, there is no need for the centering tool.

well maybe I didnt read enough because every thing I read in 40's tech people loved and preferred them, esp. in the threads discussing the centering tool and procedures.

the 80s crowd jury seems to still be out on that one.

I have both here and open to suggestions..... I take it you like OEM for some reason
