I'm one step closer to moving my "on the down low" 40 project to the house. I wanted to see if anyone has a tow bar that I could borrow for a week or so that will fit a stock 40 bumper. I need to move it about 4 blocks so it doesn't need to be in the best condition, just functional (all back roads).

Also if any one has a stock drivers seat or set of front seats that will fit a '71 to '73 that I could borrow or buy. I'm open to any condition that I could use for some minimal short distance test drives. Eventually I'm going to upgrade to suspension seats so this is just to get the project going.

I'm sure this list of "beg, borrow, or buy" for the 40 will grow but I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. More updates to come.

Thanks,
Norm

I think pictures of the "Down low 40" are required here :flipoff2:

I might have to knock some of the ugly off first before she'll be presentable.

Lets see some pictures. Can't be worse than the stuff I start with. PM me. I may be able to help you.

I am bringing my vehicle trailer down from Flagstaff this weekend. You are more than welcome to borrow it. The 40 would go completely on the trailer, so no tow bar needed.
Let me know.

Leaving town in a few days, just buried and covered my car hauler two days ago.:bang: Has a winch for non running vehicles. Could possibly help thru Sunday. My FJ40 bumper and towbar are up north. Never having towed a vehicle before hard to say how it will handle. My 68 handles great, 79 has a mind of it's own.

Thanks @brices123 and @Living in the Past . If I can't get a tow bar I may go the trailer route. It's such a short trip and I can drive it really slow so I was hoping to go the "less work" route. Where it's stored to get a trailer back there will take maneuvering, pushing, and possibly re-arranging adjacent vehicles. The tow bar is hook up and go!

OK, maybe just a couple of teaser pics. But go easy, it looks worse than it is (which helped me acquire it in the first place).

It can't look worse than this wagon I picked up

It has similar bad patina :hillbilly: It looks worse that it is because it had dark maroon primer which is now showing through a very old, weathered black or dark grey paint job. Looks like surface rust from a far but is pretty solid, some is surface rust, floors are really nice, and the sill isn't rusted apart.

'71 with an older V-8 conversion. Bezel has the correct orientation, most of the badging and lights are in place. Good bones for a weekend driver and functional "drive to the trail" wheeler.

Nice score, the body looks better than both of mine when I picked them up.

That's the burnt one that was on CL a few months back right? I thought about checking it out myself. It looks pretty dam good. Mine didn't have wheels or even anything to bolt wheels to.....lol. You are ahead of the game. Nice score. Alittle elbow grease and it will be a sweet ride.:grinpimp:

I've never found one way easier then the other to get ready before adding a winch to the car hauler. Four axle straps and winch, quick and easy. Done both for years, lately been using the car hauler more. Mainly because it's easier to get spotted where I want at the destination. My driveways up north are crushed cinders and not easy to push a vehicle. With a car hauler unload them directly onto the concrete floor of the garage. Tow bar would have to drive up leave enough room to get the vehicle out of way. Then push up and into the garage. Loading two people and a tow strap usually easy to load. Unlike a tow bar car hauler allows you to load the way you want. That way your not trying to spin it to get it the way you want.:meh:

Burnt one???? As in Roger's old rig??
It's a sad day when someone torches a 40!

I don't think it was that one. The one Norm pictured (if I am correct) appeared on CL awhile back. In the ad pictures you could see it had burnt around the gas tank / passenger seat area. Deja vu with Norms.

Jack is a winner! Not Roger's rig. It was on CL for a while and the ad said "small fire". The problem was that the patina on the rig made it look like the whole truck got toasted. Turns out they ran dual exhaust off the headers with the mufflers ending right about were the gas cap comes out. Didn't take much to figure out that someone spilled gas on the hot exhaust and poof. Melted some paint, filler tube, passenger seat, may have expanded the gas tank. It didn't burn the dash pad on the passenger side so couldn't have been too bad. We'll see.

Forgot to mention if your willing to wait until next month I could get my FJ40 bumper with tabs welded on and old U-Haul tow bar converted to fit the tabs back to the valley. Besides towing cruisers all over the state for twenty plus years I've used it to tow cruisers home from CA,
OR and WA. I also have a piece of 7/8" uni-strut with 69-73 tail lights wired to a standard four pin trailer light plug. Easily bolted to the bumperettes. If I would have been able drive may have been able to transfer it to somebody on this months run.

@Living in the Past due to some recent developments I think I can wait till next month if you end up bringing that tow bumper back to the valley. Provided it's no trouble. The 40's arrive will be slightly delayed.

Not a problem, stored in the bed of my FJ45 and easy to get to.

Curious did U-Haul know you were towing a FJ40 on the trailer pulling it with a FJCruiser?

Yeah my thoughts exactly

U Haul wouldn't rent me a trailer to bring my FJ40 back from New Mexico behind my Tacoma, but were more than happy to sell me a tow bar.

They were right tho, a 40 is way too heavy to tow safely with a Taco.

Good times . . .
