Hi,

Just got my first one, an 87, and it is awesome!

Anyway, the PO had a circle-shaped sticker on the passenger door which i slowy peeled off and there is a 4-5 inch circle of rust.

It seems to be just on the surface. What is the best way to handle this?

I have been reading about POR and others for rust on the bottom of the cruiser, but should something visible like the door be done with something different?

After I am all done repairing, whats a good place to buy touch-up paint?

thanks all

You'll have to sand down to bare metal, treat it with "metal prep" from your local automotive paint store, prime, sand, shoot with "rattle cans" of matched paint they can mix up.

I'm guessing it would cost $1-200 in the PRC to have a body shop do this.

Why rattle can?

What is the PRC?

And why would i rattle can the new paint, isnt there a better way to apply?

thanx

you had rust on top of the paint? I'd take something like a screwdriver and push into the area of the most prominent rust. it might just go right through and the rust is a little more extensive than you think.

I had an area on my rocker panel that looked perfectly fine, no rust, no bubbles, no nothing. bumped a tree stump and it crumbled like a dry cracker.

Well, ja.

But if you're trying to save $ & you're not an experienced body/paint guy (who would have known how to do this with perfeshunul tools), then the rattle can is the answer. Only, of course, if it's not rusted like a dry cracker.

el rusto

the rust was under the paint.....i am just gonna sand down, apply treatment.

where do you go to get matched paint for your cruiser? what options do i have?

I tried getting a march for my cruiser, but they told me they could not match faded white.

i dont know about where you are but theres a great place by me that matches your paintcode and puts it in a rattlecan. pretty sweet. just call/ask around

sounds like you had the same type of hole my 87 had. Was this hole towards the back of the lower door below the doorhandle? If so, it was caused by debris getting into the water channel and you need to get in there and clean it out before any repair is made, or the rust will just come back....I pulled the door panel and sprayed compressed air and water and then let it dry. Just b/c i tend to be a little anal i drilled some alternate drain holes on the inside lower door area.
