Has anyone had 4.88s installed in the Des Moines area and what was the approximate cost? I was also considering a rear locker at the same time. My 40 get a fair amount of road time and will get moderate off road use. Any thoughts or suggestions?

See what others say but for on-road uses I'd leave the diff gears at 4:11 or even go up to 3.7, and get the low gearing from 4:1 in the transfer case, either using an Orion or the new 4:1 gearset that fits a stock split t/c.

A rear locker is definitely the next step... easy and cheap to add an aussie or similar, but on-demand like an ARB is optimal if you can stomach the additional $

I have a 4:1 orion with 3.7's in the red truck and I very seldom use low range first gear unless crawling through technical obstacles where speed/inertia isn't needed.

BTW - guy in the club (Zang) has a couple 40 axels with ARB lockers in them that you could probably buy...

Thanks. As you know my 40 is pretty stock. I would like to staddle the fence with a well behaved cruiser on the road but can feel comfortable taking it places to have fun. I know I want it all. It is nice to hear what everyone has tried.
