I have a 85 bj-70 and still have lots of parts from older fj-40's. I just got the 70 and know nothing about them. Without digging into it I was wondering if 76 fj-40 third members would interchange with my 70. The 40 diffs where rebuilt and I have a detroit locker in the rear.Plus the gearing change would be beneficial for a taller tire.Sorry if these are old questions but not having to much luck with the search.

Thanks in advance.

the third will fit,but the 76 pinion has coarse splines and the 70 has fine splines and the bolt pattern on the two are not the same, you can change the york on your driveshaft so it will fit on the 40 pinion flange.

I saw another source that told me I have 4.11's in the bj-70. How do I confirm this without driving there? It is at work so I won't see it until Tuesday.

Find your axle code on your vehicle ID plate (probably on firewall) and compare it to this chart Toyota Differential Gear Guide

If you cant find the code or have reason to believe things have been changed, here is an easy way to get a rough idea. Put a mark on the drive shaft and one on the rear tire. Move the vehicle until the tire makes one full revolution and count how many times the driveshaft goes around. Three and three quarters time would be 3.73's and A little over four times would either be 4.10's or 4.11's. Four and a half times would be 4.56's ect......

Thanks BJ 71. I am actually using your bumper build as a template. Mounting a Warn 9000 that I had in the shop.Pretty similiar but I made some changes to prevent copyright infringements. :)

Glad I could help and flattered you liked my bumper design. Look forward to seeing your changes. My only regret is making it a little heavy, I should have used lighter gauge steel. I plan on making cut outs in the gusseting and back supports to lighten it up
