How can I see the difference between a 3B and 13B motor?

I'm going to have a look at a motor soon and haven't seen any of those IRL

3B is indirect injected, the 13B and 13BT are direct injected. You can tell by the injectors themselves, and by the data tag for the vehicle. All of these have inline injection pumps, though some 3Bs from Japan have rotary injection pumps.

Thanks for the correction John. I must of been seeing things or just plainly remembered wrong when I thought Gold-Boys 13BT in his 73 had a rotary pump.

Correct. You would also NOT see glow plugs across the top of the head on at 13 engine. Any 3B engine would have both an injector and a glow plug visible on the top.

Ok

I was under the impression that there is a 13B engine without turbo. I read it on Wiki, but that doesn't make it true. I heard somewhere it could be an industrial engine.

The owner told me it is a 13B, but he could have mixed up his facts.

That's why I wanted to check with you guys.

We all tend to make statements based on what we're personally familiar with seeing.

But here's a 13B (without the T):

And I think 13B or 13BT can come with a rotary pump too (just as a 3B can)!

Note all 13B-Ts are 13Bs with a Turbo added , They are the same

Another question

Are all applications with 3b/13b/13bt 24V?

If so, is there a 12V starter that will fit or will I have to fix this myself?

Maybe one of the Aussies can chime in . I believe Austrialian 13B-Ts in their BJ 74s are 12volt
Also canadian spec BJ 70s with 3Bs and BJ 60s have 12Volt electrics depending on year.

28100-56191 is a 12V (and 2.5kW) starter used on 3B-powered and 13BT-powered BJ7# series cruisers according to the EPC.

My BJ40 is running a 12 volt system along with a 13B (also without a "T").

Vehicle of origin I believe was a Toyota Dyna commercial light truck so parts availability is good - probably better availability than for a B or a 3B. But, that's just supposition - I haven't needed to replace anything as yet apart from filters.

I recently purchased a BJ42 imported from a Africa with a diesel engine. Is the engine a 3B everyone talks about?

Maybe!! Check the rear of the block on the left hand side. It should tell you there.

Correct mine is 12V, nearly everything aus market is 12V
