Hi,

I am looking at 3B engines to put a turbo on and was wondering what is best, rotary or inline ?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The rotary pump is what they used on later models. Rotary pumps are capable of higher RPM. They both last about the same on the B engines.
However there is another reason I would take one with a rotary pump. Many of these come with built in power steering pumps, vacuum pumps which eliminate 2 of the biggest headaches for B engine owners.
Im not sure where you are looking but I would be looking for 14B or 15B if possible. A 4.1 litre 15 BF out of a Dyna BU112 has the rotary pump and built PS and VAC pump. You would have to import one of these but you would get a lot of engine for the money

What do you mean built in p/s and vacuum pump ?

The bain of the B engine owners is the vac pump fitted at the back of the alternator.Replacing them means $400.
And if you have power steering it means running a belt to turn the PS pump.
On the later engines(not just the 3B) they built the PS pump and vac pump into the front plate of the engine and are driven off the cranks gears. This means they are well lubricated and last longer than the older types.

You can see the vac and ps pump on the lower RH side of this 3B II , which is a newer version of the 3B. I think it has a bigger crank and more cam bearings. It also has a rotary pump.

Yeah ok that makes sense. Do the 3B II's all have the later valve cover ?

Any idea what year they were released ?

Lots of info about the entire range of toyota diesels on wiki

Yup, the mark II B's and 3B's have the finned alu tappit cover, But Thats Not All, folks, 5 bearing cam and the vacuum pump thingy, but also under piston oil squirters, and a 10 bolt exhaust outlet, which takes a 14B turbo manifold in case you ever want to turbo.

Late 80s I think. They were in a few types of Toyotas like trucks and buses in different markets. There is also 13B which has the direct injection ect
