Hi All, what have people done for installing a water temperature gauge into a '85 3B? I think my factory gauge is on the blink, not that I've ever really trusted it, but I'm not quite sure where I should be starting.

Thanks

Be very careful when you remove the square plug.

Generally, you have all the adaptor needed in an mechanical temp gauge kit.

Mech gauge is always one of the first mod I make on my cruisers.

In the leftmost position in your photo I have a plug - I presume this is where you would hook in, instead of replacing the factory gauge? I believe the thread is M16x1.5?

Yes at the leftmost position.

Yes I add the mech sensor instead of replacing the factory one... my factory sensor / gauge still work. I just want to ad accuracy to my engine temp reading.

Thread paterne... I do not know. M16x1.5... maybe. I never check but, as I write, there is few adaptor fitting in the mech temp sensor package to match the correct Toyota thread pattern.

Do you need to remove hoses etc before installation? Any need to bleed the cooling system afterwards?

Only remove the square plug/bolt.

Coolant will drop along the removal and the sensor installation but not to much...

Ask someone to put is thumb or put a rubber plug if you need more time. Add coolant of the approximate amount that you lost.

If you factory sensor is dead and you do not plan to replace it, use that hole since removing the sqare plug can be a PITA.
