I'm looking for a 36111-60020 1972 3-Speed FJ40 Transfercase Housing or a 1972 3 speed transfer case PN 36200-60940 or 36200-60930 (I think)?

I have several of each in Burbank. I have been rebuilding transfer cases since 1987.

Are any of the generations of transfercase interchangeable?
Most, actually. Opinions vary on relative strength between them.

What about a late 60s and an early 70s housing?
I think they’re fine. It depends on how well the gears are inside them. I have all the parts on hand to build cases with all new internals. Tolerances on some of the parts are not optimal IMO, which is why some people prefer a newer case/internals.

I purchased a "1972" 3 speed t-case housing but it is the previous generation. I need to replace my cracked housing and reuse my internals. Will that work? Is the earlier housing significantly weaker?

If your case cracked, there’s a fair chance that it did so because the gears put undue stress on it from wear. You should disassemble your case and do a thorough inspection of all the parts, paying particular attention to the hole inside the idler gear, as well as whether the teeth of any/all gears have shadow lines running across them about halfway down the face of the teeth. Either of those are grounds to replace the gear.
