I know a lot of people like the HZ and consider it the holy grail to some extent. That said, is there anything wrong with the KZ? I would expect less power and torque but also possibly better fuel economy which for me would be a fair trade off as I don't expect to tow...

Nope, there is nothing wrong with a KZ. Comparable hp and torque but an different engine characteristic. HZ build for heavy duty trucks and KZ for light duty trucks. A slightly better fuel economy. KZ engine is lighter too. There different types of KZ's. The first one with 130 hp and indirect diesel injection. The versions after that had all direct injection and have more horsen and better fuel economy.
Where do you want to use it for? A project-truck?

I don't think any of the KZ engines are direct injection? Maybe you mean the KD engine which is the successor?

KZ engines are great with lots of power potential. With little effort they can make far more power than a normally aspirated 1HZ. However like other small indirect injection turbo diesels, they do absorb a lot of heat into the head, and can have head cracking problems if run repeatedly hard. The later ones, especially with intercooler are much less likely to have problems like this.

Moving to the land of Land Cruiser in less than a year and looking to figure out what I'd like to purchase... Thinking a 76 or 77.... 3.0 KZ or 4.2 HZ..

Y'r right: 1KZ-T and 1KZ-TE are indirect and 1KD-FTE has direct injection. They are al 3 liter 4 cylinder diesels.

I think you were confusing mechanical with direct..

Although rare, the early mechanical pump 1KZ-T is the pot of gold KZ. The later TE has the POS ecu that crap out. Mine never had an issue but many do and they aren't cheap nor readily available... at least outside Japan they aren't.

Remember though that the truck around the engine will be completely different, too. The KZ you get a Prado. The HZ you get the real deal but they ain't cheap.
