The dates we have planned for this event are 25-27 September 2009 at Carolina Beach.
Here is what is known and unknown at this time-
1. Drive up from Myrtle is about 1.5 hours by going across on ferry at Southport rather than driving up to Wilmington and then across and back down to Carolina Beach. Ferry ride adds another 35 minutes to this. About 4 hours from Charleston .
2. Ferry ride at Southport is about 35 minutes...puts you in at south end of island and then you drive to north end until you reach Freeman Park. You can camp, drive, cook, etc there on beach. All beverages are permitted as long as no glass containers or cups are used. Fires are permitted with use of your own fire pit or you can buy one up there.
3. School will be back in session so should not be as crowded but it is First Come-First Served for camping so I propose we plan on arriving before noon to be sure unless we can get a couple people to go up early Friday morning and stake out a large area for majority of group.
4. There are no proper showers there...but is a place to rinse off but they ask that no soap be used...so likely to rinse sand off. Biodegradable soap and a dip in ocean may be the other option unless you rent a motel room long enough to shower and freshen up....but afterall it is CAMPING so if you get to rank smelling we can toss you in tidal pool.
5. I have some pictures and other information collected by a prospective member that wheeled with us at Uwharrie. Her husband and she went there last weekend and gathered information and took pictures for us. Mylene and Thomas in blue FJ Cruiser....the FJ is hers and he has a Tacoma and rock crawling 4runner.

6. Looking at something simple for Friday night group.....and everyone is on their own for lunch and breakfast unless people gather in unorganized feeding frenzies on their own. Saturday night will be Lowcountry Boil and the main event. David Milligan will bring his cooking implements; I am bringing some pots and cookers as well. If you want to pitch in and help let Dave Milligan know.
7. Fishing, swimming, sand castles....and we are looking to see if there is a historic or special interest site nearby for a little road trip for those that want an excuse to get out of sun and wind and sneak a hamburger from McDonalds.
In addition to all of this we are looking for some volunteers to help with following:
- tshirt design and everything from conception to delivery
- pricing for event to include Saturday night meal, tshirt, etc; get with Upstate Cruiser guys to get a PayPal payment process setup if possible to pre-pay for event and tshirts. Will need accurate record of paid attendees and have means to collect fees on site if people wait until then to sign up.
- someone to set up events for kids and adults during day; maybe a dead man anchor winch demonstration if beach is not crowded. Volleyball, frisbee, stickball, etc.
- someone to follow up on initial contact I made with vendors for raffle items or donations
- at least two photographers to capture events of weekend
- someone to check on license requirements if anyone wants to surf cast (fish), drag a seign net, etc.
-
We will discuss again at July Meeting to finalize and ensure nothing is missed. Thanks a lot for a great first year of the Lowcountry Land Cruisers and lets make this event a fitting closeout to our first year as we look forward to the next.
