OK, so the air pump on our 1983 fj60 seized...again.
I'm sick of replacing these things. Truck is de-smogged.
I'd like to install a 2nd alt in the pump's place.
I also have an alt from an 96 fzj80 lying around.
Will it bolt up? Will I need any special type alt for
this setup? Special bracket?
Any tips ? TIA

Do some searching. I think people have used a GM alterator in the smog pump location. If your smog pump went out again, I would make sure you don't have some other problem causing it to go out. Your air cleaner have oil in it? I would try and find a Bosch alternator that would fit. They make good alternators with external voltage regulator with the brushes.

I had the Delco one-wire alternator in place of my smog pump and run to a 2nd battery. Two separate charging circuits. Worked well.

Thanks for the input guys.
My p/s pump doesn't leak.
Air pump is clean and dry.
It doesn't connect to the air cleaner
as the truck is de-smogged.
Air pump just serves as a belt adjuster.
At present I don't care if the alt is even connect to
the truck's system. I'm going to try to use it
as an adjuster.
I'll post my results when I remove the air
pump.

Why not just gut the smog pump and replace the bearings? Much cheaper. You could buy the smog replacement tensioner pulley also from $OR.

Just thought.

Hmmmm....I think I'll check the $OR unit out! Thanks!
