I have not used this antenna, but it seems to be a bit short. I have a similar gain Comet antenna that is over 10 foot long. If it were my money, it would depend on where the antenna was going. For a easy place to get to, I would try it. For over 100 foot in the air, I would pass.

Just my oppinion.

Keeping it simple

I think it would depend on what type of user you are or are intending to be. I keep it simple and go cheap. I have $35 mag mount that I use at home and in the Saab and can hit repeaters 40 miles away and it’s just sitting on my desk. I also use a cheap home made J-pole made by Ed Fong I got at HRO in San Jose. I hang it on the wall with a thumb tack and it works great. I don’t really do much besides checking in with our local ARES net so I don’t need much. I’m not sure how good it is for Simplex.

Well done on passing the exam. I agree, look at building a cheap 2M J-pole antenna wither out of 'TV line" with some good coax or from copper tubes. As cheap as you can get and better than most mobile applications and cheaper than a dedicated 2M base antenna.

You should be able to hit local repeaters, including those across the lake with a relatively basic antenna. When mobile, I can often pick-up (RX) a signal from ~100+KM (VE3MUS).

Cheers, Hugh

Cool... I made a makeshift antenna for RX for now, a used VHF commercial groundplane antenna (fire/police etc) that was 16" whip. I soldered on some fresh co-ax and made my own steel whip with some piano wire from the hobby shop. My whip is currently 36" and I have NO ground plane. (I plan to trim it to 19" and put a ground plane on it)It is stuck up in the corner of the room. I was RX'ing WOEAS 147.255Mhz from Rochester. According to my gps that is 673Nautical miles from me. (over water) Repeater output is 100W according to website.

So I just need my paper with my call sign, a quick trim and a ground plane and I'll see if I can hit that repeater!!

Will let you know how it goes - maybe I can hit a repeater to get to you ?

HOLY FASHIZNIT!!! I just calculated that into Km.... almost 1250km!!!! It was clear as a bell!

WOW!

I think Rochester is only ~60NM (missing a decimal?) from your QTH - in any case, you should get it fine! You can each Toronto repeaters either via IRLP (do a search) or, potentially, with radio-liked repeater systems. My stuff is in the truck, but there may be one that goes East towards K town

Yeah, I think perhaps their GPS coords may have been wrong... I got the coords off their web site. I drove down to Rochester earler this year. Last night after I wen't to bed I was thinking, Geez, it didn't seem that far by car.... Checked it out online today and it is less than 300 mi by road... Hmm...

60NM sounds better.

Oh well.

I'll see if I can reach TO when I get set up.

Dual Band Antennas

Are a compromise. If you are going to the trouble of installing a base antenna use the best coax you can afford, 9913 at least. Keep it as short as possible.

I have a Hustler G-7 and G-6 at mt QTH. They are a poor mans repeater antenna. They work super. I use them for simplex work. Repeaters are very public.
