Hey all, I live on a remote Pacific Island and have had a great few years out of an ex Japanese Toyota Landcruiser with a 2LTE motor. Importing anything here is hard, and vehicles have high duty so it's not an easy option. One of my staff overheated the Landy, drove it till it died. On turning over it sounds like the compression is gone. There are a couple of mechanics here that can do basic rebuilds, new rings etc, but things like planning heads and such, no go.

I have noted the discussions on the2LTE on here, and see they are not a well respected engine. So before I do anything, I would like some advice from people who have been here before. Is repairing this engine an option, or is it dump job? Also, can this model be easily repowered with a 3L engine, or are the connections different?

Thanks in advance. Island4X4

Yes it can be easily replaced with a 3L or probably even a 5L. If you dont have anyone capable of doing complete quality rebuilds ,then its pointless trying to rebuild it.
Or you could rebuild the bottom end and buy a new aftermarket cyl head from australia.
Leaving the turbo off the 3L will ensure a long life.

Might look into what is involved with a 22RE gas engine swap. That's what I would do, if it wasn't too much extra work. I've read on this forum that this model of Land Cruiser came with the 22R engine in some markets.

Yes.. Like mine RJ77 but doesn't 22re were only installed on 4runner?
Is it compatible with the land cruiser?

You're probably correct, the Land Cruiser only came with the 22R.
But, 22RE is essentially the same engine with fuel injection, right?
I guess the main concerns going from diesel to gas would be engine mount location, wiring harness, radiator and transmission compatibility. Maybe not so easy...

If I switch to a 3L or 5L at what point does the exhaust match up? Do I need a full exhaust as well, or just the manifold? I am in a remote location so I need as much information as possible so I order all the correct parts.
