Hello
New here and looking for a bit of help
Have a 84 Hilux with a 2l. Just rebuilt upper and lower and looking to make her a 2l-t
I was told that I will have to drill and tap a few new holes for the manifold to fit ( no problem) but I need some advice on all the rest.... plumbing etc..
does anyone have a step by step of this project? I was able to find a manifold and a turbo.
Thanks

Can you post a picture of the manifold and turbo you found? There are a couple iterations of the 2L, and the later 1990+ manifold and turbo are not bolt on to your later engine.

I know @RyanMiller turboed an older 2L I’ll see if I can find that thread

Hi John
Thanks for the reply.
I don’t have the manifold in hand. It’s in Canada. Was told by them ( parts dealer) that it would work but a few holes would have to be drilled and tapped
Not a big deal for me to do but I wanted to see what else would be involved to make it happen before I made the initial purchase .. about 800 bucks with the used turbo..
I’m trying to figure out how to plumb the whole thing to estimate the cost for it

800 bucks seems pretty steep for a used manifold and turbo. You can get ebay turbos for $100-200 and many on this forum have had good luck with them (I found a NOS Toyota turbo for $700). Not sure what holes you would need to drill and tap unless they’re talking about an egt gage, but that’s not strictly necessary.

the only plumbing to speak of is oil feed and return. There are a few ways to do this but the cleanest IMO is to drill and tap your oil cooler for an oil feed port (it should have a boss on the casting where the 2lt port would go). There might be other available ports on your 2L block but I’m not sure. I know the 3L has an extra one near the back on the exhaust side that has a plug in it. You will want the drain line to be good size (1/2”+) and ideally tap your oil pan for it. Some folks have teed into the alternator oil return but I view this as too risky since you really don’t want that drain to back up. You can water cool your turbo if you want, but I chose not to - Lots of reading available on that topic if you search for it.

Expect to have an exhaust shop make something up to adapt to the down pipe of the turbo. Intake plumbing is pretty easy, I got one of those intercooler kits on eBay, they have all different lengths of tube and silicone adapters for around $100.

Very helpful and thank you
I have seen the 200 dollar turbo on e bay and was a bit hesitant, did a search for that manifold and didn’t have any luck. It did seem very pricey ( twice what I was guessing)
I’m not in a hurry because she is still running fine. I think I’ll just keep checking until one pops up
The exhaust I have someone who can make a custom fit for it. The rest doesn’t sound bad!
I was reading that I should get close to 40% more power. The poor girl could use it The truck is in great mechanical shape along with the frame so it’s going to be a great project
Thanks for your help!
