Anyone else seen this? I've seen some sites where a couple guys were doing engine swaps to their 4Runners and was wondering if anyone has tried this with a FJ40. They were swapping out the engines with either a 1JZ-GTE or a 2JZ-GTE from late model Supras. Not sure how practical this swap would be, but definitely pretty high for the uniqueness/cool factor. Don't know what kind of tranny/transfer case combo you would run for this. At least you could say it's still just an old Toyota straight 6! ;p

A 2JZ would be cool for a street driven machine...

But in a big heavy land cruiser, your HP and Torque won't come on until the turbo's spool.
You'd be left behind. But once the turbo's spool... YEEHAA!!!!

You would have to have a LONG drivetrain (700R4-toybox-Atlas II) to be able to effectively use the HP necessary..

There are cheaper and easier ways.

Tigerstripe40, point well taken. Probably need something that will bring the torque on much earlier to get all that metal moving. Back to the drawing board...

stall,

torque curve on that engine? dont think i have ever seen one, dont think low rpm
would be all that bad due to engine layout.

i see a number of adapters to GM trannys, specific autos as toyotas cannot be build to handle
high end power. th400.

It's WAY up there.

320hp @ 5600 rpm
315 ft/lbs @ 4000 rpm

1FZ-FE is
212hp @ 4600 rpm
275 FT/Lbs @ 3000rpm

The powerband can easily be shifted with a nicely sized turbocharger. Besides, 1000 RPM more is not that bad. It's like driving a 22R. Gotta have them revved.

if you are very concerned about the turbo issue mill the head for higher comp. ratio or high comp. pistons then run less boost. less boost ussaly means quiker spool and more cfm which is what matters

I have been thinking about that option. My concerns were regarding low end torque as well. You would probably shed close to 300-400 lbs as well. You could try to adapt to the existing tranny or could put a 5 spd mini tranny and tcase in with either a doubler or some 4.70 gears and a centered cruiser rear end as per Woody's article.

Can you imagine the look of the engine bay afterwards? That engine would look tiny compared to the 2F.

Although a idea not sure its a good one.

Mark, now that your are driving a big arse diesel, thinking you should convert your trail rig to a good old reliable 3B with booty fab turbo???

No, I'll just get a trailer to tow it on! :flipoff2:

I've got too much $$$ into the 2F to swap it out right now.

Can anyone find a link of info on anyone who has done this swap ? I just picked up a 2jz ge real cheap and would like to know if it is a option . Thanks David.

it would be easier, cooler and more practical to use a v8 of either toyota or lexus heritage. i saw a tundra powertrain sell for 2k once with everything to make it run.

I just picked up the 2jz for $100. I think this would be a kick ass swap. 230 stock hp plus 20 MPG. I need info as to what tranny to use. Can anone please find a link this or something similiar , thanks David.

I want a semi daily driver , I dont drive very far no more than 10 - 15 miles a day. I found a write up from someone who made a high bred tranny useing a r 154 and a r150 f , does anyone have any info on this ?

I think if I went with the mini tranny and tc , I'd have to change rear ends ? does anyone know of another set up ? Thanks.

Ya, do a cruiser centered rear end like Woody's.

The 5m-GE and the 7M-GTE both bolt to the 22R motor mounts and the 22R transmissions. So does the JDM 6M-GE.
2JZ might be a lot harder to fit, not to mention a buttload more money.

Incorrect. The 5M can use the frame mounts but not the motor mounts and can use the G/W series bellhousing. The 7M-GTE requires more motor mount work and CANNOT bolt directly to any 22r series transmission. It requires a custom bellhousing in order to bolt to anything (recommended R150/151). See www.supracharged.com for more info.
