Good evening,

I'm not quite halfway through replacing the clutch on my '86 HJ60. Everything is disconnected and all of the bolts are out. The engine is supported by a floor jack, and the transmission is supported by a transmission jack. After trying for several hours today, I've only managed to get the transmission a half an inch off. What's the secret here? Some kind of jack magic?

Advice is very welcome, I'm a bit stuck here.

Is the engine tilted back, by a lot? Are you catching the shifter plate on the body?
You know, I was exploring the lower elevation ranges with the engine yesterday. Today I'll try with the engine stuffed up in there some more. The shifter protrusion at the top is not yet an issue, but I was trying with the whole outfit hanging below the shifter hole in the tunnel.

The only other problem I'm encountering is the vacuum actuator for the transfer case is getting hung up a little on the crossmember mount. However, there's plenty of room with it all jacked up further.

Got the dang thing off, it wasn't that bad once I removed a tiny bolt on the front left of the bellhousing cover plate that was overlooked. It helps to sleep on it!

My suspicion that the clutch was fine but the pilot bearing was shot turned out to be true. The new clutch assembly feels a little bit lighter than the old one - perhaps it'll recover a tiny amount of power from the old 2H.

Glad you got it figured out. I did this a month ago, What I needed to do was remove the low range shifter linkage, and remove the bell house. It didn’t cross my mind to remove the bell house but it for sure helps.
